HS2 - Cancel it now

France suffered its own “Beeching” axe.
All over Brittany there used to be a spider web network of regional lines. There are scores of old stations dotted everywhere. If they had survived it would have now been an amazing tourist network.
Instead it’s a desert. If you have no car you are fucked. Buses are so rare we play spot the bus competitions when we are there.
5 points if you spot one. 10 if it’s actually moving!

They've got a nice bus network on the Ile de Re and the velo-buses this year were free. it might be the bonus that comes from still charging for the bridge!

Scrap it and give us an upgrade on transport in the north. Over 90% of central gov spending on transport goes to London and SE.

Scrap it and use the money to provide super fast broadband so people can live in nice/remote places, and do their office jobs without having to physically come anywhere near London. The Internet should be enabling flexible home working for any computer /office jobs. This would address childcare, silly London house prices, transport, and allow people to gave a quality of life somewhere with a nice view and no traffic fumes.

Whenever has a major rail project been brought in on time and on budget?

Only God knows how much HS2 will cost and when it will be completed.. You atheists will have less of a clue.

I tell you now, it will be nowhere near on budget, and nowhere near on time.

How much is the estimated cost today?

Taken From: http://stophs2.org/facts

When a new high speed railway was first mooted as an alternative to expanding Heathrow airport, the suggestions were that this would cost about £18billion. However when the HS2 proposal was firmed up and made public, Phases 1 and 2 were expected to cost £33billion in total, with Phase 1 opening in 2026 and Phase 2 in 2033. By 2013, this had risen to £42 billion, excluding the cost of the trains. A further review set the funding envelope for delivery of the full HS2 scheme of £55.7bn at 2015 prices.

And because of the enquiry later this year, the truth about costs is starting to come out and it'll be at least five years behind schedule

""

the current scheme requires a total budget - including contingency - in the range of £72 to £78 billion, again in 2015 prices.

Adjusting by construction cost inflation, the range set out in Allan Cook’s report is equivalent to £81 to £88 billion in 2019 prices, against a budget equivalent to £62.4 billion.

There is "overwhelming evidence" that the costs of HS2 are "out of control" and its benefits overstated, the deputy chair of its review panel has said.

Lord Berkeley said the high-speed rail line, linking London and northern England, is likely to cost over £108bn.

A vocal critic of HS2, the Labour peer said he believed MPs had been "misled" about the price - set at £55bn in 2015.

And not forgetting the cost of the build doesn't include cost of the actual trains

It's a genuinely fucking mental idea. Right up there with VAR ;)

Complete fucking joke.

And the latest completion estimate for the Manchester line is 2040, but again that could be put back

What advances in technology will there be by then?
Exactly. Spending obscene amounts of money on yesterday's technology is chronically unimaginative and spectacularly shortsighted, particularly when we're about to see some of the biggest ever changes in the way people work.
