HS2 - Cancel it now

Nothing against HS2 going ahead. But it is totally scandalous that the construction companies are having HS2s and us, the tax payers pants down with the escalating costs and blaming unforseen ground conditions. More is known about the ground conditions in this country than probably any other country in the world. Certainly enough to make a very good stab at the likely engineering requirements and costings with a contingency allowed for based on a refinement made on the Site Investigation. Cost over runs on this scale just do not happen in the private sector.

Builders in running over time and budget shocker! Had plenty of that.

Beggars belief. £100+bn to get to/from Brum-London 20 minutes faster. Why? What difference will it make? Some say it is to reduce the number of people flying between the two and yet they are expanding Birmingham airport.
It’s as much about capacity as speed, if not more. Something has to happen if we’re going to remotely hit our green targets, which are hugely important imo. Only chance the planet has got is if Western Europe takes the lead on becoming truly green and the rest of the world follows. Otherwise, humanity is basically fucked and the planet will take hundreds, if not thousands of years to recover after we’ve wiped ourselves out.

There is no other meaningful alternative to HS2 that’s comprehensive enough.

It's needed to free up the tracks for more commuter trains. I think all the northern towns and cities are for it.
You don't hear much about the build costs for the Chunnel these days. That's been a success despite all the reservations at the time.

You’ve got to spend big on these grand infrastructure projects from time to time if you’re going to push forward as a society.

I agree, but it needs to be fully supported by local infrastructure.
