HS2

Depends in what sense you mean 'poor'. I saw the lunchtime news yesterday and it is proposed somewhere (Sheffield maybe?) to demolish a lovely looking, and not so cheap, brand new housing estate that is actually still being built with new houses going up in a cul de sac. People had only moved in there a couple of years ago to their brand new place, young families and the like. Looks like they are going to be turfed out, poor buggers.

That was Mexborough. I just wonder what the main thrust of this railway is. Is it to get folk out of the North and back to the inner confines of the M25 or is it to generate and regenerate the industrial wastes of Lancs and Yorks. There will be billions spent, double and quadruple billions once it's finished and nowhere near the initial cost that was put before the people. It's a north-south line, when anyone up here will tell yer that the crying need is for great improvements on an east-west route.

I've posted about HS2 on here numerous times
No it won't only be poor people, however I believe it's still dog legging around the main part of Gideon's constituency, but it will still run through a huge part of it
I have friends who will be affected and the residents in the Cheshire village of Pickmere are non too impressed
It's actually planned to run across the underground gas storage just outside of Northwich

Did you know that there isn't enough space to build a line into London or the space to construct a new platform, so at the moment the plans are to run HS2 on an existing line and platform and make the London commuters get off their trains on the outskirts and catch a bus in

It is the biggest waste of money ever. There is no comparison with HS2 and the M1 which is what the backers are comparing
As for just over an hour to London from Manchester, that is a load of old bollocks
The train can travel at UP TO 250mph, but it will only reach that speed for extremely short distances. The train will spend most of it's time accelerating and braking when going into and out of speed restricted areas.
All in all it will probably knock 20 minutes off a direct journey,
Will only be available to the wealthy or business commuter who already travel in first class
Will mean less trains on existing routes (confirmed in the Government's release yesterday)
Do nothing to alleviate any road congestion around cities
Do nothing to alleviate any overcrowding for local commuters
Will in the end cost in excess of £100 billion
Will be outdated technology by the time it's completed

it truly is a waste of money
It would be far better if it were invested into local routes
All the data shows that where high speed rail has been introduced (such as France) it has very little benefit to the poorer areas.
One fucking dickhead Councillor from Leeds was on radio yesterday saying Burberry had moved a manufacturing plant to Leeds because of HS2 !!
Somehow I doubt they'll be packing their newly manufactured coats and hats into containers and loading them onto HS2 to be distributed across the country

Money would have been better spent installing fibre broadband across the entire UK so people could have digitally commuted. That would have also eased strain on the current rail network.
 
Currently pissing myself at all the NIMBY wankers in nw London and the chalfonts that think this should be ruining poor peoples villages instead.

Would it be cynical to suggest that it will go ahead in order to provide Tory-donating construction companies with a reasonably stout order book? Would all the materials be 'home-made' or would we do the usual thing and take up the Johnny Foreigner cheaper tender?

One of the arguments made by the anti HS2'ers is that all the pro economical forecasts are coming from the people with the most vested and financially benefiting interest
Nearly every independent study undertaken says that it will not show anything like the economic boost the Government and lobbyists are claiming
