Mark Hughes brushed off Robinho's decision to walk straight down the tunnel after the Manchester City forward was substituted against Tottenham Hotspur.

Robinho was replaced after an hour of City's 3-0 defeat at White Hart Lane on Wednesday evening and opted not to sit on the bench after being taken off.

City boss Hughes confirmed that the club's record signing was not injured, but was not concerned by the Brazilian's reaction to being substituted.

"He wasn't injured," said Hughes.

"There is no hard-and-fast rule that he has to sit on the bench.

"He started reasonably well down the left-hand side. He was involved and linked with our front guys, but as the game wore on he found it more difficult to have a positive impact so we made a change."

No excuses
Hughes was unhappy with his team's performance as goals from Niko Kranjcar either side of Jermain Defoe's predatory effort boosted Spurs' hopes of a top-four finish.

"We're disappointed," added Hughes. "We didn't hit any kind of level. For the first 30 minutes we took the game to them, but in terms of producing a real threat we were not creating.

"At the moment we are having difficulty when the ball goes into the box. We were disappointed at half-time because we thought we should have done better with the goal. The second goal killed us.

"There are no excuses, we missed personnel and were lacking width because of that. but we had a team good enough to get a positive result."

Secondly, i cant remember the ball getting in the box from open play last night Mark.

Thirdly, you had Weiss and Petrov on the bench which could've supplied the width..........................Mark!

I do hope Hughes had a word in robbies ear, i can see why he played it down in the media as the last thing he needs in his current position is giving the media more bullets to fire at him.

But saying all that i think Robbie is dealt with slighly different than most other players at our club.

Maybe Robbie felt bad about his performance or he felt disalusioned about Hughes tactics game plan? It's times like now you notice little things in games and i noticed last night Hughes was looking for Robbies hand when he subtituted him rather than Robbie looking for him.

He should have just said he's not bothered because like any player Robinho just wants to play football and can forgive him for being angry he come off.

I hope Hughes isn't being this cowardly in the dressing room. I can understand him not criticising Robinho publicly but I hope he's taken a different view privately. At the end of the day the club pay Robinho's wages so he should do what the manager tells him to do, whether he likes it or not.
