I dont view poor as good, rich as bad. Its extreme wealth and power thats bad as they control the means to allow change to happen. Crime is a function of levels of relative poverty.
Many of the problems in society is down to a lack of community, where did it all go wrong ? Well it got immeasurably worse once businesses and cooperations (owned by the very wealthy) decided that it was cheaper to manufacture in China and ship things half way around the world than produce locally and keep people employed. The driving factor being profit margin. Then we have the ex coal fields which were left to rot, why ? Because the dared to stand up to the government (the powerful) when mines, which were still viable with investment, were being closed. What did they replace them with ? Low value jobs in warehouses and call centres, not high value jobs. Instead they ploughed the money into London's financial centre and the home counties with high tech industries. That was rinse and repeat across every other industry whether that be Docks, Steel, Clothing Manufacture etc. Outside the the square mile of London and the leafy parts of the home counties nothing exists to those with the more extreme level of wealth. This isnt just UK centric but is true across most of the Western world. Couple that with excessively liberal approaches to discipline for nearly 3 generations and is it any wonder we get people who just dont give a fuck.
Ive lived in rough areas and nice areas, where rough areas used to have a sense of community that has gone, its every man for themselves. Dont get me wrong there are some lovely people but they are dwindling. On the contrary, in middle class rural areas like where I currently live, I can honestly say I couldn't have nicer people surrounding me, kids are polite, everyone helps each other out and looks out for one another. The difference being that the income disparity is much lower, nobody is living on the bread line, most are either retired or have managerial/executive roles earning salaries that give them no need to be pissed off and angry. They spend time with their kids, value education and set expectations, which is easy to do if your household income is six figures plus but exceptionally difficult if you're working 2 jobs to keep the lights on.
Bottom line is if there was less relative income disparity across society there would be much less crime and people would generally be more civil. What drives income disparity is the greed of the exceptionally wealthy by keeping people indebted.
