Humans, a really shit species

Do you really believe that the famine was due to sparrows, rather than drought? You need to consider that there are many other species of birds in rural areas. While it might be relatively easy to catch sparrows in urban areas, how would you go about capturing them in the mountains? People in that era lacked the advanced technology to effectively kill birds across vast wild areas. And it is certain that there must have been significant overreporting regarding the number of sparrows killed. I don't believe sparrows were that important.
Yes I do believe that the mass killing of the sparrows, along with other birds caught up in it, resulted in the start of the greatest mass starvation in history.
Birds were killed in many ways such as destroying nests, beating pots and pans, preventing them roosting. Many simply fell out of the sky from exhaustion.
This was all part of Mao's Four Pests campaign, to eradicate flies, mosquitos, rats and sparrows.

Really there were 5 billion passenger pigeons in North America we wiped the lot out by 1914 didn't matter where they lived.

Bur we don't remember anything about the "greatest starvation in human history". No such thing.
20-40million?wtf?
The famine in Henan province in 1942 resulted in the death of 3 million people, which is already a very tragic and profound historical memory. How could a famine causing the death of 30 million people occur without leaving any memory?

Maybe because there was a world war in progress at the time with millions dying it got over looked.

In light of recent happenings nearer home at sea, plus all the wars kicking off at the moment, pollution, hunger/starvation, poverty, disease...we really are a shit species, we've ruined in a couple of hundred year or less....., what once was a pretty decent planet, it's going to be fucked shortly and hopefully we go first.

End of rant. As you were !!
As you get older, and you put World War 1 and 2 into relativity in terms of distance between birth and current age, it gets quite frightening, and I completely agree with you.

Oh, you know, it's not that bad, really, being a human.

Most of us get along just fine, are polite and friendly with each other, don't really have any evil intentions, and most of us just want to live our lives with full stomachs, a roof over our heads, and the love of our family and friends to sustain us.

The problems arrive when total dickheads decide they want to change those simple, basic needs with their idiotic notions of ideal societies, and become politicians.

They unfailingly manage to fuck everything up for all of us one way or another.

I've travelled all over the world, and received nothing but welcomes and kindness wherever I've been.

People are great wherever you travel, and we all live under the same sky.
