I read posts like yours, and don't recognise the place you describe, and wonder if all a lot of people just sit at home reading social media.

Granted I'm not living in a City, largish very ethnically diverse town though (white/black/muslim/far east), I've just been out for an hour on foot, I don't see any tensions anywhere between anyone. Yes there's poverty in pockets, there's crime here, there are drugs, there are some gangs even, but mostly people are just getting on with normal life.

There will be firework parties in the next few days attended by all communities no doubt.

Then I read threads like this (and others), and wonder where some of the opinions come from, because I just don't see it.

I live in a city that has changed so much with immigration in the last 20 years. My neighbours are 50% immigrants now on this road. The local people are still here, doing what the local people have done always. Be local.
There's no difference, apart from some people have different colour of skin. And I 've never met a hostile Muslim. My new next door neighbours are Muslim. Should I shout at them for being Muslim? Blame them for what some extremists have done somewhere in the world. I'm sure that if i even mentioned it to them (terrorism and extremism), they wouldn't have a clue what I was talking about.

It's something that's mutating, malignant, and spreading and turning up in areas where it shouldn't. I think describing it as a cancer is apt.

It’s a technicality though mate. If the motivation is to promote a position (white rights, black rights, Palestine action, Irish freedom, green issues, etc etc) it’s terrorism. If it’s a couple of nutters on the loose who were live streaming it on tik tok, or wanted to become infamous, etc etc it’s attempted or actual murder.

At this stage the police have enough evidence (or lack evidence) to say it was not ideologically motivated. The good news is if it’s just a couple of nutters the left and right can still argue the toss about cause and effect.

The reason that a terrorist charge needs to be investigated and charged correctly is because the sentencing guidelines are often higher upon conviction, and post-release requirements ensure that such criminals are often more closely monitored. I think this is why people are concerned that the full facts are established and made transparent, even if it does happen to be a couple of nutters with knives attempting to murder numerous innocent people. It's not always about left and right, it's often concerned citizens hoping that knife wielding maniacs receiving substantial appropriate sentences. Remember, many folk have already lost trust in the police and CPS precisely because of previous crimes being under-charged.
