Hyde Road

This is where the Hyde Road Hotel (later City gates) pub was where players used to change in early days

You can make out exactly where it is as you can see the two triangular roofs and chimney still present today. (Edit - not to mention the road crossing!!)

You can still see the bottom row of stones in the ground, even see where the doors were. I don't think the railings have changed so you can use it as a reference point.

I did a walk around there a few years ago using old maps and information from (the always excellent!) Gary James, went round Bennett Street, Clowes Street etc, trying to find whereabouts St Marks was etc. Gutted I never noticed those stones as you are right, you can make out the door of the pub!

What was clear from comparing the old maps to now is just how much that place has changed, there was row upon row of houses, almost a whole village completely gone or replaced, just two streets left.

I tried to imagine row upon row of the above, with steel and heavy industry works nearby, smog etc. That was what we came from, it's pretty unrecognisable now. Would recommend any blue who likes there history to have a walk round that estate armed with an old map and see how much "original" stuff you can find. Definitely deserves a plaque somewhere.

Once worked with a bloke who lived in that area, until the council compulsorily purchased the street , £25 was deemed to be "the going rate"... in 1952....
