I Believe in Miracles (film about Nottingham Forest)

I am looking forward to this.

As a 23 year old I can't quite get my head around somebody taking a second division side to promotion to the top flight then winning the league in that next season followed by back to back European Cups in the space of 4-5 years.

It would be like one of Bournemouth, Watford or Norwich winning the league this year and winning the Champions League back to back in 2017 and 2018.

Can anybody tell me if the likes of Robertson and Burns would make one of the top sides now?

Was Shilton better than Hart?
Robertson was a fantastic winger, just as good as Barnes was for the murkysiders. Burns was no Paolo Maldini but, along with Larry Lloyd (or Dave Needham), they formed an almost impenetrable heart of that Forest defence, assisted by Viv Anderson and either Colin Barrett (formerly of this parish, as was Ian Bowyer) or Frank Clark. Yes, THAT Frank Clark!

I was at the game in 79 when we won 1-0 at Maine Road (Kazi Deyna) and first time they had been beat all season I think. The ground went mad!
Afterwards I was on the corner of Maine Road / Claremont Road as the Forest coach left the ground..... I was aged 16 and awestruck at being so close to Brian Clough, sat at the front

Robertson was deceptive by his looks - he looked podgy but could actually run with a bit of pace (a bit like Ricky Holden without the pace)
Where as Larry Lloyd was in did fat!

Robertson didn't really rely too much on his pace (he didn't have that much anyway). But he had magic feet; he could outsmart his fullback, get himself a half yard of space and then send in a demon of a cross. His delivery was top notch. And they had various combinations from Woodcock, Birtles, Withe and tricky Trev waiting in the middle.

Clough was indeed a genius and a shame he never got to manage England, far better with Peter Taylor as his assistant to temper his mad moments.

I echo the comments on Shilton, a top notch keeper, best England have had in my lifetime, his performance in the European cup final vs Hamburg remains one of, if not the best keeping performance I have seen.

Should be a good watch the film.

In my time in Nottingham I met many of this group of players at various points. Almost without exception they were huge, huge drinkers, especially Larry Lloyd, John Robertson and Kenny Burns. I once spent half an hour telling Viv Anderson how much he looked like Viv Anderson, without realising he was actually Viv Anderson. Fuck me, I was pissed that night.

What Clough achieved was truly incredible. A rag-tag collection of players that nobody else seemed to want. Plus Trevor Francis, of course.

It must have been an incredible time to be a Forest fan, but it weighs enormously on their shoulders today - to the point it stifles and suffocates the club imo.

Clough had that priceless ability to make a team of 11 players far better than the sum of its parts. Kenny Burns for example, when he was at Brum as a CB I thought he was just a typical Scottish clogger of the time, like Jim Holton at the rags (younger readers ask your dad or grandad!) but somehow Clough made him look like if not Maldini then not far from a John Terry of the time. And as you say, Barrett and Bowyer, two players deemed surplus to requirements at City were made into key components of the team by Clough.

Here are the highlights of the first leg of their first round European Cup tie against the holders Liverpool. Gary Birtles before the rags ruined him and watch that volley from Colin Barrett near the end.
