I Don't Hate Hughes

It only takes a win to turn things around.

Personally I feel he's made one or two tactically poor decisions that may have cost us 2 points, but otherwise I think some players need to take some of the blame, in particular those who start to play long balls up as soon as we concede a goal. A tactic that hasn't worked for 2 months.

those are our manager's tactics. like peter reid did when he was manager, he pretends otherwise. if the same players were wearing blackburn rovers shirts we'd be calling them a long ball team. we never play football from the back. we only have two tactics. i) the punt from defence (or shay) to adebayor or, ii) the ball to the left or the right. nobody picks the ball up from defence a la bercovic or benarbia and carries it. ireland is the man for this job but it's clearly not something that is asked of him.

"we're frustrated because we're getting into winning situations and not seeing it out."
this is the comment that sums up mark hughes' thinking. trying to 'see out' a one nil win at home to hull city! we have now failed to beat three of the worst away sides in the league and, still , the excuses pour in. i think it was shay given, a few weeks ago, who gave a major insight into our manager's tactics. basically it's, because we're better than the opposition, all we need to do is keep it tight at the back and we'll hopefully have enough ability to score. when we went a goal up right on the brink of half time, it worried me that that would be enough for the boss and he'd send his troops out in the second half with the instruction to "not do anything silly." my fears were realised when we appeared to do very little to try and increase our lead. even when hull equalised and we were attacking, i noticed we still only committed four men forward.

after merely being a critic, i am now planting both feet firmly in the 'hughes out' camp. there is nothing on his cv to suggest success is on it's way. he's only good at managing sides with low expectations i.e. wales and blackburn. it will take a drastic change in tactics, and results, to get him back on side.
The Hull game was the turning point for me.

The problem for me was that we spent the entire game with Adebayor/RSC, Robinho/Bellamy, SWP, Tevez 4 with no way of getting them in the game. It was the same story in the 2 previous home games. Rather than being too defensive we over-committed men in forward positions, and compromised both our attacking and defending

I thought Hughes made a pigs ear of most of last season.
By the end though,we were looking like a decent outfit.
So I thought that we should give him the benefit when he finally got "his team" together.
Sant Cruz apart,he's bought exceptionally well-and here in lies the dilemma for me.
He can obviously spot a player-but I.m begining to believe that he just doesn't have the skill, nouse, gut reaction, whatever you want to call it-to make the vital decision, the judgement call in games that gets probably the most talented overall squad in our history "over the line."
In other words, the difference between winning and not winning.
And knowing how and when to motivate and change the things that make draws into wins.

Yesterday for instance.Although this could probably apply to most of our recent home games.

Stephen Ireland is playing like a defensive midfielder at home, when we already have a player in De Jong more than capable of holding a paceless and toothless Hull attack. Why?
Ade,one of the best forwards in Europe,is reduced to chasing hopeful 60 yard punts from the full back. Why?
SWP looks a shadow of himself ,his first touch and "zip" seem to have gone in the last 12 months. Why?
Tevez having to go into our half to get the ball, then launching into 50 yard blind alley "glory runs" with little or no support...why?
The team seemingly losing all it's shape after half time with players panicking and dropping deeper and deeper, inviting the opposition on until the inevitable finally happens....why?

Hull came out and had a go in the second half,we start to shit ourselves.
Then the virtually immobile Santa Cruz comes on, when we're crying out for pace to turn them the other way and give them something else to think about....and we're effectively playing with ten men for last 20 minutes, with the ball pinging back at us....baffling.
Why didn't he push SI forward,or give Weiss a chance to scare them with his pace?
This is the point I'm making-Hughes will go "saftey first,"like for like and comfort zone..whereas the top managers, the ones who know how to change a game, will take what was effectively a home banker witha vastly superior set of players and make damn sure they get the three points.

After that performance yesterday,my old doubts about Hughes being "big" enough for the job are all starting to come back.

to qoute the OP i don't hate hughes either.

i fucking detest the cretin along with his clueless coaches, for making us look like jobless wasters who have won the lottery and not knowing what to do with it! how dare the taffia ruin the greatest thing to happen to our club!

get him out now!

Hughes isn't the manager to make City title contenders. His job to make the players gel and stabilise the team. You don't bring in so many players and expect them to perform together just like that. It works for a few games, like Internationals but over a sustained period the players need time to learn each other. This season was always going to be transitional, painful but transitional. Money spent doesn't equal instant success. That's not football. Next season will be our time, top six minimum this season and then the sky's the limit next season.

Why are we the only team that needs to gel? Spuds seem to have gelled pretty quickly and the Villans. The trick is to hit the half-way line running. Can't see why 'gelling' should only apply to us, or is it that gelling is the soft option or best excuse.

It's hard to come on here and defend 7 draws in a row - particularly the three draws at home - but I personally have seen enough to suggest this won't continue.

I don't think anyone could convincingly argue that in the games against Hull, Burnley, Liverpool and Fulham we deserved anything but the three points on the balance of play. We have also suffered as a result of some terrible refereeing decisions.

Wigan - Man sent off
Fulham - perfectly good goal disallowed
Burnley - dubious penalty - Was Lescotts 'deliberate' handball ?
Hull - Never a penalty
Birmingham - dubious penalty - Was De Jongs 'deliberate' Handball

All of these things are beyond Hughes' control and have cost us points.

In the games like Fulham and Liverpool where we conceded straight after scoring I'm positive had we held the score for 5 minutes we would have undoubtedly gone on to win. I don't even remeber Hull (bar 2 minutes after half time) or Burnley getting in our penalty area in the second half and yet on the rare occasion Burnely Score and Hull get a penalty.

I appreciate there's a huge amount of if's buts and maybes in here but I don't believe we can keep getting these sort of decisions against us and seemingly being punished for every lapse in defence.

Turning just a couple of those draws into wins and acknowledging we have a game in hand we would be comfortably in the top 4.

As it is we still have a fighting chance of getting in there (even though this would be above our target for the season) and on that basis I just don't get the hysteria.

Keep the faith. Blue army !

The ONLY thing keeping me from saying sack him is the hatred spouted towards fergiescum by manyoo fans way back then, and looking at what he did when he was given time.
Don't forget, they continually outspent other teams despite not winning the league for a long long time, and look at what has happened since.
The phrase about Rome keeps coming back into my head though I am fast losing faith in someone I thought was an excellent appointment. I really did like the thought of losing the 'typical City' tag.
I really did think that he would make us consistent (sorry but 7 draws in a row is never anywhere near good enough)
It worries me hugely that Hughes has brought in so many of his cohorts to run the club.
I think the pressure is starting to get to the players too.

Never wanted him in the first place.
What has him and his team ever done in management? Welsh national team, Blackburn. ffs
Even without the takeover this guy was never good enough 4 us.
I hate how it's all his mates who he wants in and not the best people 4 the job.

Look what Chelsea did when Scolari was f**kin things up and the players were not playing for him. They done something straight away and sorted it out. Got Hiddink in then got a replacement sorted out. Now look at them.
So all this shyte about keeping stability is bollox. We just need the right man for the job and Hughes it aint.
