History buff meself. I like mediaeval european and Napoleonic era. will we have to call you Dr Bango?

I must admit, I like reading about the Peninsular Wars myself.

I assume you guys have come across Richard Holmes' books on the redcoats in that period? Great stuff - he gave a presentation at one of my department's events earlier in the year. Top man.

Edit: I'll also recommend Marcus Rediker's 'Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea', and 'The Many-Headed Hydra' (with Peter Linebaugh) which is about the world of the Atlantic ocean in the 18th/19th centuries. In fact, anything by Rediker is great.

I've been meaning to read it. It's been on my list for ages. Bernard Cornwell always gives the book credit in the historical notes at the end of his Sharpe books.

Okay, I still have to write a conclusion, but to all intents and purposes it's finished, all 107,000 words of the bastard. All being well, I can hand it in as planned at the end of September unless my supervisors rip it to shreds.

Not particularly interesting to most, but it's one of those things which you want to shout from the rooftops! I cannot put my relief at getting to this point, and I don't want to see it again for several weeks. Now I can look forward to enjoying the Wolves match with a big weight off my shoulders.

*goes for a lie down*

Congratulations!!

Now, put your feet up and have a beer, you deserve it :)

I read The Fatal Shore - fascinating and very moving book.

Anyway well done mate. As for the conclusion that's easy; We sent them the dregs of our society. Clearly it's hereditary.

Cheers PB.

The Fatal Shore is a brilliant book, I wish I could write like Bob Hughes. It's also frequently inaccurate, and as my specialist subject is Norfolk Island, don't even get me started on those sections!

You'd also be surprised how well-educated and highly skilled the convicts sent down were. It really is a fascinating period, and getting your hands on the original documents is, strangely enough, quite a thrill.
