I preferred it when we were sh1t

I used to hear Blues coming out with that line from time to time. They were usually the ones who only ever went a couple of times a season anyway, not proper fans. It was as if it was an excuse to justify their laziness in not going to games and the fact that they ALWAYS preferred holding hands with the Mrs rather than going to the match anyway - even when we were shit. The thing is, it’s a shit excuse. I’m not having it that any supporter of Manchester City truly believes this; It’s like wishing you still had to get off your arse to turn the telly over. These days you don’t hear it as much as it’s becoming harder to justify this belief with each trophy that’s added to the honours’ board.
But I am as nostalgic as the next man and the days of my youth spent standing on the Kippax in the 80’s was magical. So too the match day experience and the feeling of love and passion I had for City was arguably greater back then when we had to shout to urge the team on rather than just sit back and watch and purr at the delights we see these days.
This brings me back to the title of the thread. I hated being shit and getting relegated. I hated being the butt of Utd fans’ jokes. I hated that ticking banner. In fact I hated them lot from Stretford full stop - I still do. I would have given ANYTHING to have lived for the day when they finally got put back in their box by us. Now that day has long gone! We’ve p1ssed on their chips big time and won everything there is to win in England many times over. The day we beat them at Wembley was one of the greatest days of my life as it felt that we had finally put behind us all those years of shit and could build a winning mentality again. We did. Since then it’s been the stuff of dreams and if anyone ever says they preferred it back when that ticking banner was a reality, back when Ged Brannan was in our midfield and Alan Ball was telling us to run the clock down in a 2-2 draw when we needed a win to stay up then they seriously do need a slap.
I miss the humour and being a WWHWWWS blue my mentality hasn't been able to shift from expecting despite world domination City will fuck it up.

On an away day the girlfriend said “stay in bed and I’ll give you head”
I said “I’m sorry, love, I must refuse, I’m off to see the Mighty Blues”
35 years and we’re still here

I remember travelling to Sheff Weds on my todd and not being able to get in. Didn't have a ticket but I thought I could buy one. I'll never forget that disappointment when I had to concede and go home. Still haven't set a foot inside that famous ground.
Before The Hillsbough Disaster it was my favorite away ground, although the last game I went there was Gary Flitcroft's debut, I'm told it hasn't aged well since then, in the 80s it was easily in the top half dozen grounds in the country

Were we as insufferable as the Rags back in the 60s and 70s? Because we were seen as one of the biggest names in English football then and had been for a long time and the 80s and 90s hadn’t happened then.
Different times back then. Fans of both clubs would routinely mix without rancour. Often going to Maine Road one week and then to the Swamp the next. It would take a major societal shift for tribalism to depart from the game as it is now and I just can't see it happening. There's even in-fighting amongst our own on twitter where some people are unable to accept "out-of-towners" in our support base so I don't really hold out much hope.

A lot of the posts in this thread read as though the poster is actually saying 'I liked it better when I was in my late teens/early 20s.' And for a lot of people posting on here, that coincides with a time when we were shit.

For me, I separate the football itself from the experience. Yes, going to the match (or the pub, or on holiday) is a different and often more enjoyable experience (apart from the football itself) if you are young and have no responsibilities or worries. These days, I often find half time is a distinctly uncomfortable experience as I queue behind hundreds of blokes aged 40-60 who have all been on the beer all day and who all have bladder problems.

But the football we play is better than anything I have ever seen any team play at any point ever. I sometimes can't believe it's my team - the team of Richard Edghill and Tommy Caton and Bobby Shinton - that is slicing open Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Someone said upstream that being shit is shit. I'd prefer to say being brilliant is brilliant.

And we are.

I started supporting City in the early sixties when we were in the old second division. Then Mercer and Allison came in and we went on a tear for the next few years and it was great . After that we were basically crap until the Sheikh bought us then we were great again.

In my experience being great beats being crap all day long. I hope we stay great forever.

The match day experience at Maine Road was far better than the Etihad IMO. The football at the Etihad (post takeover) has been far better than anything I've seen at Maine Road.

Back then we had a football ground that was not symmetrical and a corner stand dubbed 'The Gene Kelly'. Nowadays we have a modern stadium in that is aesthetically pleasing, unlike Maine Road.

The thing I loved it back then was the acceptance of being a blue and banter that went with it, something rags could never work out. I'd hate to be a blue having never experienced the bad old days. of being shit
