I remember when we were that abysmal..

Seems like a lot of us developed enmities against a particular side during the shit days, often for quite personal reasons. These teams might not be a traditional rival, but may just have been the team we were playing when we’d finally had enough and snapped after years and years of watching shite.

Ipswich seems a popular one but my hate team back then was Charlton. I had one of the worst hangovers I’ve ever had at the away game in 1997 (I think), the hot weather wasn’t helping and my attempts to ‘drink through it’ were horribly misjudged, particularly when Jason van Blerk scored his own goal. One of the longest afternoons of my life and even now I’d think twice about going back to that shithole.

Neither were traditional rivals but we were locked in often bitter promotion battles with both Ipswich and Charlton.
Managers and fanbases of both were often publicly disparaging of our club and our fans. Especially Burley at Ipswich
And both fanbases revelled in our demises as we struggled to consolidate consecutive promotions while they stayed up.
So, quite frankly, Fuck Ipswich and Fuck Charlton.
I have thoroughly enjoyed and revelled in their many many years of third division misery and I sincerely hope both showers of absolute twats suffer even more years of torture before they eventually go bankrupt.
Nearly got my wish with Charlton on more than one occasion but better luck next time. Ipswich have spent beyond their means so hopefully administration is just round the corner.
Charlton are only ever five years from a financial meltdown anyway, it would be a Dignitas mercy killing if they went bust and started again.
There is a serious and genuine Curse of Manchester City btw
Luton, Bury, Stockport, Oldham, Ipswich, Charlton, Lincoln, York, Bristol Rovers etc etc
You might beat us a time or two when we are down and out, at our lowest ebb, but sooner or later you end up begging and tramping it in non-league, gasping for every breath of survival like a dropped goldfish, while City soar to a different universe.
You showed us zero sympathy or respect back then, indeed you laughed your balls off at us.
So you will, of course, fully respect and show due sympathy when we say fuck you all and fuck your tinpot shitholes. We will toast your every defeat and failure. We will laugh our bollocks off when you go bust, as you thought we were going to do back then.
Bitter Bert? You better fucking believe it

This must be the most bertiest of Bert posts. Ha ha.
I must admit that when we beat Ipswich in that cup game when we were a division lower was one of the most satisfying games watching City. Absolutely tore them a new one. I don’t think they ever recovered to be honest.
Anne Robinson has a lot to answer for some city fans.

Absolutely brilliant and saved me writing the same. I was in a bar in Corfu when Ipswich beat us to more or less confirm our relegation. I remember the sign they had, "Man City, your are the weakest link, goodbye!" Fucking wankers.

I remember when I used to have soft spots for other teams, Stockport being one, but most fucking revelled in our downfall so that disappeared. Now with the absolute crap spouted online about us, stoked up by the hideous media, I detest the lot of them. I think Sunderland is the one exception.

They didn’t realise that we were just playing the long game with them.

Admittedly, neither did I at the time but I suspect that the various fan bases won’t really emerge any wiser from their struggles, and that their behaviour is just part and parcel of being a small club / town / village idiot.

It always strikes me the abuse our players get when we go to these smaller teams, even though it’s an opportunity for their fans to watch genuine class players in the flesh. You wonder what they get out of going to the game.

I've quoted your other posts about Ipswich but can only say again how delighted I am to see equal disdain that I have for them. I would have been 10 when they relegated us and had a fantastic argument with another kid that supported them on a beach in Devon that summer they went down and we went up.
