Seems like a lot of us developed enmities against a particular side during the shit days, often for quite personal reasons. These teams might not be a traditional rival, but may just have been the team we were playing when we’d finally had enough and snapped after years and years of watching shite.
Ipswich seems a popular one but my hate team back then was Charlton. I had one of the worst hangovers I’ve ever had at the away game in 1997 (I think), the hot weather wasn’t helping and my attempts to ‘drink through it’ were horribly misjudged, particularly when Jason van Blerk scored his own goal. One of the longest afternoons of my life and even now I’d think twice about going back to that shithole.
