I remember when we were that abysmal..

My own personal low lights were sitting in the old North stand watching us lose at home to Bury,.. 0-1 if memory serves , and also, again in the bloody North stand, watching Jamie Pollock score the most horrendous own goal,… I think agains QPR.. Abject misery on a weekly basis it was in those days supporting City,… and then going into work to be mocked and abused by rags that didn’t even go to old toilet..Terrible times indeed..

enjoy it again..

That I fucking loved it.

It was a strangely dire and brilliant at the same time, the worse we got the more defiant we became and the more creative at amusing ourselves.

It was a bit like having an ailing pet where the worse it gets the more love and attention you devote to it despite the fact all it's really doing in return is making noxious smells and craping all over the carpet. Fortunately our old knacker eventually got the full Supervet treatment!

Never mind I’ll settle for a good cup run.. Mid week game Man City V Blackpool in the league cup. It’s gone to penalties. Come on Lee Bradbury your turn. I have faith in you. You will surprise everybody and you will be the star forward at Maine road the best since franny lee . Oh and he shoots his penalty right over the bar. Brian Clark Picadilly radio commentator describes the moment. And that shot has gone over high wide and handsome. That’s city out of the cup again. The Kippax faithful going down the steps. That’s it now i’m going to rip my fucking season-ticket up they can all fuck off I ain’t supporting that shit ever again. Suffice to say … We Forgive them again and we are back the week after standing on the Kippax with renewed hope.

We had some bad results that season. Amazing we went up really.

Fulham A - 0-3
Wrexham H - 0-0
Notts County away -1-1
Chesterfield H - 1-1
Northampton A - 2-2
Preston H - 0-1
Lincoln A - 1-2
Reading H - 0-1
Wycombe A - 0-1
Gillingham H- 0-0
Luton A - 1-1
Darlington A (FAC) - 1-1
Mansfield (AWS) - 1-2
Bristol Rovers H - 0-0
Walsall A - 1-1
Chesterfield A - 1-1
York A - 1-2
Oldham H - 1-2
Wycombe H - 1-2
Bristol Rovers A - 2-2

Quite funny looking at that and only 25 years later we have won 5 Prem leagues and 7 cups.
I don’t recall the defeat at York at all. Strange how you forget things.

Yeah it was Vuoso (Argentinian). He was signed on the drip at 1st (750K up front). He was originally slated to be on the bench against Wigan in a league cup tie but his contract stated that if he came on for any minutes another 750K was due). We had Anelka, Huckerbee, Goater, Fowler, Macken etc so he was deemed surplus to requirements and he couldn't speak English at all! Funny enough he went back to Argentina, won a few caps, and had a decent career and played in the South American champs league with Diego Forlan as his strike partner.

I got a Lego set for Christmas in that season we last went down (back when you could still get normal sets rather than themed ones), and threw the box away because I was convinced the kid on it looked like Jonatan fucking Johansson, another baby faced twat who was a thorn in our side around about that time.

I did keep the Lego of course.

Like Robbie Keane he was one of those twats who looked like a bad bad school grass and yet scored against us every time

Just when you thought (in those days)
It couldn't get worse
IT DID!
Bury at Home Oldham Port Vale etc
Mua ha ha
Yeah, 1997/98 was probably the worst. Soul crushing, every week.

Bury. Oxford. Vale. Crewe. County.

Another new player. A new manager. A new owner. Hoping that one, despite all the evidence to the contrary, will be our saviour.

But no. Steadily and progressively getting worse with no end in sight; like a TV show that jumped the shark 4 years earlier but is inexplicably still getting new seasons commissioned.

Obviously we were a division below the year after, but we won more than we lost (especially after Christmas).

We haven’t really been particularly shit for much of our history.

We were supposedly very poor in the early 1960s. Even our ever loyal supporters fucked us off back then with crowds at their lowest ever in our history.

Then from about 1983 to 1988 we were very poor. But had a really good side in the early 90s; we finished above United in 1991 in 5th and above Liverpool in 1992 in 5th (in years they both won trophies).

Then we were proper shit from about 1995 onwards that saw us spiral down to the third tier. I thought that Frank Clark side was the worst ever. We were in huge debt yet we spent £3m on Lee Bradbury?. Joe Royle came in and saying the squad was ridiculously big, the Platt Lane training ground was worse than what some school teams facilities were like, we were proper shit then!

But I really liked our team under Joe Royle. I still love Nicky Weaver, Andy Morrison, Gerrard Weikens, Kevin Horlock, Shaun Goater, and Paul Dickov today. Royle’s a fucking legend for what he did! And again under Keegan with Stuart Pearce, Richard Dunne, Eyal Berkovic, Ali Benarbia, Darren Huckerbee, Paolo Wanchope, Marc Vivien-Foe, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Nicolas Anelka… the last year at Maine Road, the first year at the CoMS… they were great years!

Then we took a nose-dive again under Pearce where we were terrible at home, not scoring for half a season and only scoring 10 all season. But that was very short lived and we still got 40,000 every week!

Outside that we’ve always been a decent First Division/Premier League club. That’s why we’ve always been up there in the all-time league table; United only ever overtook us for the first time in that in 1983. And we’re right up there for most seasons in the top flight; only one place and a few years lower than United.

I think we overegg the shitness of Manchester City Football Club. All that “never forget where we’ve come from” shit is a load of bollocks. Apart from a few eras, for the most part of football history, we’ve been a proper decent club in English football.

For some reason, a game that sticks in my mind is a trip to watch us play Wimbledon at Selhurst Park. I don't recall much about it except we got beat and the quality of football was absolutely dire.
I remember being on the train home thinking the best part of the day was looking at the book shops of Charing Cross Road, and having a scran in a little Italian place near Leicester Square which used to do the best value for money meal south of Trent. And that led me to think 'You must be fucking mad spending all that money to follow City. Can't you take up something more enjoyable, like stamp collecting?' But next match I was there at Maine Road. hoping something would change. And it did. We got a lot worse.

Was that the game where Ali B scored a consolation, Pearce got sent off and we lost 2-1? If so I was there.

“we were that abysmal..”, we appointed Alan Ball as manager.
Coming from the Fylde Coast and seeing what he had previously done at Blackpool, I knew what was coming!

..I used to put city shirts over all the united shirts in the sports shops.

Small victories mattered in those days.

I still do anything be it shirts, mugs etc. I got caught putting the City calendar above the rags in the Range a few Christmas ago. "What you doing" said the bloke " just putting them in their league position" I said " No we put them in alphabetical order so leave them alone" I said "so U goes before C in your alphabet you numpty" lol
