I Was There

Am I the only still left alive from the Cup Winners Cup Final at the Prater Stadium in Vienna ?

My most memorable matches (good or bad) attended:

1. April 1963: A 1-0 win over double holders Spurs thanks to an Alex Harley goal that failed to save City from relegation.

2. January 1965: A 1-3 cup defeat at Shrewsbury in a replay that marked the worst point for City.

3. January 1965: Four days later a 1-2 home defeat by Swindon in front of 8,015 at Maine Road.

4. New Years Day 1966: A 2-0 win over second placed Huddersfield in front of 47,171 at Maine Road with goals by Doyle and Crossan.

5. May 1966: A 1-0 win at Rotherham to secure promotion with a goal by Bell.

6. August 1966: A 2-1 win over Liverpool in the first home match in Division One with goals by Bell and Murray.

7. December 1967: A 4-1 win over Spurs, the ballet on ice! Goals by Summerbee, Coleman, Young and Bell.

8. March 1968: A 3-1 win at the swamp after going behind from the kick-off thanks to Heslop, Lee and Bell.

9. May 1968: A 4-3 win at Newcastle to clinch the championship. Goals by Young (2), Summerbee and Lee.

10. April 1969: A 1-0 win over Leicester in the FA Cup Final with goal by Young.

11. March 1970: A 2-1 win over WBA in the League Cup Final after going behind with goals by Pardoe and Doyle.

12: April 1970: A 5-1 second leg win over FC Shalke 04 to overcome a first leg deficit and reach the ECWC Final with Goals by Young (2), Bell, lee and Doyle.

13: April 1970: A 2-1 win over Gornik Zabrze at the Prata Stadium in Vienna to win the ECWC with goals by Young and Lee.

14: April 1971: A 1-0 home defeat by Chelsea in the ECWC semi-final second leg. This was one of the most frustrating matches ever with Chelsea flooding the midfield and stopping anything approaching football.

15. February 1972: A 0-3 defeat at Anfield. City had been knocked out of the cup in the third round and brought forward the match against Liverpool to try and build a unassailable lead in Division One. This was the beginning of the end of City's championship hopes although the slump only set in four matches later after Rodney Marsh was signed.

16. March 1974: A 1-2 defeat by Wolves in the League Cup Final despite a goal by Bell.

17. April 1974: A last minute 1-0 win at the Swamp with a Denis Law backheel as United were relegated. This was City's sixth League win at Old Trafford in seven years (the other was a draw).

18. February 1976: A 2-1 win in the League Cup Final against Newcastle thanks to goals by Barnes and Tueart.

19. April 1981: A 1-0 win at Villa Park over Ipswich in the FA Cup semi-final with a Paul Power goal.

20. April 1997: A 1-2 defeat in Division Two to Bolton despite a superb Kinkladze free kick. Bolton looked vastly stronger than City in all departments.

21. October 2011: City's first ever Champions' League win over Villareal with an Aguero goal deep into injury time.

The most memorable games I've been to (good and bad):

1. My first game: Last game with the old Kippax - 30th April 1994 - 2-2 draw with Chelsea (aged 4)

2. Southampton at Maine Road when Gio scored that great solo goal - 16th March 1996

3. Liverpool at Maine Road 5th May 1996 when we drew 2-2 and were relegated despite Niall Quinn's best efforts

4. QPR at Maine Road, 25th April 1998, another 2-2 draw which eventually led to relegation on the last day of the season at Stoke

5. Play-Off Final 1999. No need to say anymore

6. Ewood Park in 2001 when we rode our luck in the first half and went on and thrashed them to get promoted

7. Middlesbrough at home in 2005 when Pearce put James up front and Fowler missed the worst penalty I've ever seen to deny us a UEFA Cup spot

8. Tottenham at home 5th May 2010 when Crouch scored and we missed out on 4th spot

9. Tottenham at home 10th May 2011 when Crouch scored an own goal and we guaranteed Champions League football

10. Napoli at home 14th September 2011 - our first ever Champions League game - 1-1 draw

11. Villarreal at home 18th October 2011 - Sergio's last minute goal gave us our very first Champions League win

12/13. Manchester United & QPR at home 2012 - amazing!

Notts County... was at the away game where we had a mini riot at half time; Billy Mc came out to calm us down.. still lost... ah well roll on Charlton at home

Ha Ha was at that game Billy Mcneil and Jimmy "Face like a bag of spanners" Sirrel came over to ask us to calm down! Made it worse!.Weren't we 3-0 down at half time and the Simmo scored twice to make it 3-2? Great memories of those days!

What I remember about that game was that it wasn't my turn to drive so my mate picked me up. We got as far as Woodhead when I realised I'd left my specs in the car. I needed them for distance, thus essential for the match.
By half time I was glad I'd left them at home.

Missed the '76 League Cup Final (only 5yrs old).
Saw us play AC Milan at home
Saw us play Borussia Moenchengladbach at home
Missed the '81 Cup Final and replay
Missed the '83 Luton relegation game.
Missed the '86 Full Members Cup
Missed the 10-1 (could only afford the one match that week so went the Wednesday before vs Boro who were either top or near top at the time thinking it would be a better match than Huddersfield the following Saturday)
Was at the 5-1!
Saw Lakey swallow his tongue :-(
Sure I saw something similar happen to Morely too in that era?
Missed Bradford away
Was at the Stoke Boxing Day away, but not in fancy dress.
Was at the Kippax's Last Stand
Saw Kinky's wonder goal vs Southampton
Missed the Stoke away relegation.
Missed York away
Was at the Mansfield AW home game
Was at the Play Off final
Missed the Blackburn away promotion
Was at Maine Road to watch Rat Boy pass to Goater as we put 3 past the bastards.
Was at Lokeren
Was at the last league game at Maine Road vs Southampton
Was at CoMS to see Trevor Sinclair et al put 4 past the bastards
Was at CoMS to see little Gio score our only shot of the game as we mugged those bastards
Was at the FA Cup Semi Final to see us slam those bastards
Missed the Final
Was at QPR to win the League

Was there for Lakey's tongue too. Very strange feeling watching that and not really knowing what had happened (until half time I think). IIRC I spent all afternoon defending Trevor Morley to a nearby mate (seat-wise) who insisted he was crap. End of the game he'd scored at hat-trick, my mate was more than happy for me to gloat. Still reckoned he was crap though!

Juve at home in europa league, was a lifetimes ambition to see the old lady of italian football at city. Work friends were laughing at me all day as i was a kiddy kipper all day waiting to drive over the M62 to see this one.

Loved Napoli in the champions league too.

Bring on somemore euro nights....

I was at the Huddersfield 10-1 game, felt the despair of the Luton relegation game, the elation on the Charlton 5-1 promotion. THE 5-1 demolition of the rags. The 1-1 FA cup final with tottenham (not the replay tho). The Full Members final with Chelsea which I think finished 5-4 to them in the end? More recently, obviously the QPR nerve-jangler, and the 1-0 over the rags. Probably loads of others, but can't remember at the mo.

-- Tue Jun 19, 2012 10:54 am --

Yeah I was there when Lakey swallowed his tongue. Can remember his legs shaking all over and it went really quiet.
