Idrissa Gueye refuses to wear a rainbow shirt

Homosexuality is illegal in Senegal, it's illegal in Qatar, it's illegal in the UAE too.

So who's the bigger hypocrite? Gueye, who won't wear the colours, or PSG and City who insist their players do.

Corporations should f**k off with their virtue signalling, their motives are dubious at best and the simple truth is they don't believe in any of it, or do so in such a superficial manner as to be utterly worthless.
Bit confused here so maybe you can clarify. Are you ok with the fact that 'Homosexuality is illegal in Senegal, it's illegal in Qatar, it's illegal in the UAE too'.

As far as I know the PSG game was played in France, not in any countries you mentioned and ironically their owners are Qatari so how does that square.

When you sign over your image rights as part of your massive contract that is exactly what you are doing - handing over that 'freedom' to the club in exchange for cash. Signing on to represent the club in all things it chooses to associate with. You cant even were your choice unddies in a game. You are of course 'free' to refuse but you are in violation of your contract. This will play out in the press / media or it could go to court who would be willing to look at your motivation if you think you have good grounds.

If he was going to refuse to wear a shirt with a badge on he should have had a clause in his contract. He wont have and he will have a shitty reason why he didn't. He deserves all the shit he will get in my view.

Really?

And what if the players were required to wear a shirt with a picture of a foetus with the words "Life Begins at Conception"

All the snowflakes out in force wanting to cancel a man for not agreeing with their opinions.

Fair play to the lad.
"Fair play" - the guys a bigoted hypocrite - not sure I'd offer a "fair play" slap on the back to such an individual but maybe that's just me.....

Depends on whether one believes in the rights of sovereign states or in over arching universal human rights.

I don't support criminalising homosexuality but I do not expect, nor insist that Senegal follow suit.

You're right the PSG game was played in France and France no doubt has laws covering discrimination against homosexuals and as far as I'm aware Gueye has not broken any of them. But wearing a rainbow shirt is not required by law, it is a political statement, wearing it shows support for the gay community and clearly Gueye does not support that community and he's not required by French law to do so.

PSG and ourselves are owned by investment funds from countries where homosexuality is illegal. If PSG's and City's support for the gay community is based entirely on the principle of "when in Rome do as the Romans do" then it is not unreasonable to question the sincerity of that support.

I reckon he should fuck off. If he doesn’t want to live in an inclusive society (France) then he can fuck off and play in a country that suits his stoneaged beliefs, the ****.

Wasn’t a rainbow “shirt” for a start. It was the normal shirt with rainbow numbering.

I think it's a misconception that all opinions are valid. Homophobia is a good example of a set of bad opinions, just like racism. The only respectable opinion on this subject is that LGBTQ+ people are human beings deserving of equal rights, surely? By refusing to play, Gueye is actively going out of his way to avoid supporting this idea.

Yes - The contract probably says they have to wear it.

In a breach of contract case a court might consider some objections reasonable but you would have to get to court to find out.

Gueye has worn shirts with alcohol sponsors and betting company sponsors all of which, as a devout Muslim, he should have had an issue with. Is he picking and choosing what values he is happy to uphold or is he just homophobic? Not sure what you mean with your last senstence and BTW not sure we are owned by an investment fund.
