If the worst happens who will you blame?

The worst has already happened.
I blamed Alan Ball (and Franny for not getting rid).

Before that, when the worst happened, I blamed Swales for upsetting the status quo* by bringing Big Mal back and setting a series of calamatous events in motion.

This year, I do not expect the worst to happen. We'd should be over the moon with (almost) guaranteed European football in a transitional year. (I know, it doesn't feel like that but we should be). No matter how much we've spent. Champion's League would be great - but well, it's an inevitability in the foreseeable future. So let's not go looking for scapegoats (or cats) now. It's not the way forward.

*Francis Rossi wasn't especially bothered but John Coghlan and Alan Lancaster eventually quit the band!

I agree with what you say and we can moan about certain results in the season but its the same for everyone, Spuds have lost to Stoke and Wolves at home this season so they could feasibly be out of sight by now. No individual is to blame, there is no such thing as a false league position, if we are good enough we'll get fourth in not we won't. I must admit to being a bit miffed about the tactics we have played vrs the rags and the arse, we got 1 point when we could have easily got 3,4 or 6 if we had just gone for it, both games were winable and loseable but sometimes you have to grab the bull by the horns and be a little bit brave!

Stop talking total sence.[/quote
How dare you ! I've never been accused of that on here before. Still trying for that abusive Pm, I haven't got yet, I'm feeling left out as it seem's everybody else has got one!!

i blame satan, chuck norris, joan of arc, mr. t, dr. strangelove, austen powers, dorris the lollypop lady, batman and LEEDS!!

oh and their cats...

Hughes - cnut

He has already cost us more than fourth place this season.

Hardly a rush of clubs trying to snap up his services.

You'd be surprised.......Celtic and West Ham amongst others!
I've got a hunch that he could be at Villa next season though.....

I don't think there is one certain single reason. However, the main things I look back at are:

The draws against Fulham, Burnley and Hull - Not just because they are teams we expect to beat, but because we led these games, looked comfortable and and then suddenly from out of nowhere we let them back in it. You can't afford to do this if you want to aim as high as we are.

Mancini's reluctance to attack the big teams. It's the way we play best. United were there for the taking. Arsenal weren't at full strength. We were in good form, scoring goals and high on confidence, we could have easily beaten them. But no, he decides to set up for a point and we barely muster a single chance and all of a sudden confidence goes.

United. Those two league stoppage time defeats. The fact that we couldn't close out a point with little time to go in both of those games isn't good enough. Yes, we know United always play to the very end, but we should really have done a better job at making sure they didn't score in both those games (Fergie seemed resigned to a point himself in the Eastlands game!). That would have given us two extra points and with those we'd be in a position where we could still be okay if we lost to Villa or West Ham.
Not only that, but the stoppage time defeats in the OT game and the Carling Cup game knocked our confidence in future games, as was reflected in the results and performances after both those games.
