I'd like to get a massive government grant to study something completely pointless. And then appear in a furious article in the Daily Mail bemoaning academia.

The first sentence applies to a large proportion of degree courses.

The History of the World.

I would like a really clear understanding of world history from the birth of mankind to the present day. By age, by civilisation, by continent with the ability to join dots and understand interrelationships between events. I think History is far too much divided into chunks with too little consideration of what went before, after and in parallel.

I'm a math/science nut. I really, really enjoy both fields.

Were I to set the clock back some 40 years or so... and I could choose whatever field I liked... I think that I'd choose to study astrophysics or quantum mechanics - and would pursue a PhD in the field.

Medieval history. I've got a lot of prior learning so could probably manage a PhD. But at my time of life, it would be purely for the crack. And I haven't got the spare funds even if I might find the spare time.
