If you were on the dole would you pick fruit ?

The Aussie government doubled the amount of dole payment when covid hit. So they don't want jobs. And backpackers aren't allowed into Oz.

Now we're short of 26,000 fruit pickers.
The fruit will now just rot.

Brilliant.
Why double the dole? Is it the OzG version of our furloughing, or have Oz things doubled in price since Covid?

No, we have jobkeeper, which is furlough.
It was just for the economy to double the dole, supposedly giving cash to people who will spend it.

agree to disagree. It’s no accessible for some people to up sticks and go and work on a farm miles away from home. Car or no car.
Young single unemployed people can't go work on a farm with accommodation.
I don't see why not, I would've thought they'd enjoy getting away from home for a while, having a laugh, meeting new people, I'd have jumped at it.
It's only temporary.

not disputing that mate but not everyone is young free and single. It’s suits some and not others. I’d have done it 15 years ago but if I found myself out of work now I don’t think I’d be taking a job in East Anglia to live in a caravan on site and leave my two young children at home.

One of my most enjoyable jobs was collecting glasses in The Crystal Rooms nightclub in Hereford at 17. I was active all night and could have great banter with the clubbers. I’d take photos for people or have girls make suggestive comments at me (which I loved.)

I wouldn’t do it now but it was great as a young lad.

I suspect we are living through a big shift in work. We can argue all day as to how much is covid and how much brexit related but can probably all agree that the employment landscape in this country and beyond is going to be very differently Jan 21 than it was in Jan 20. Short answer to the op is that some people will be doing all sorts of jobs that they didn't think they would before and fruit picking will doubtless be one.
I already know some West end musicians that after 30 years in the profession are driving amazon vans.
A semi-famous tv/radio presenter i know did just that in lockdown.

Ive got an idea...send ALL our convicts over to Oz to pick the fruit.. That will help decrease the prison population over here and help out the fruit farmers over there.
Isnt that how Australia was founded in the first place?
