Ilkay Gundogan - 2017/18 performances

I think he will do well replacing Fernandinho
And I do. I can see him going about his business there well, breaking up attacks and keeping the ball moving when we are getting it away from their players. I have noticed him recently arriving late in the box in the way that Lampard used to and for older types, the way that Bryan Robson (shudders) did for that lot. He has been unlucky a few times recently when picking the ball up at the edge of the box like that. I would give him a whirl there while Fern recovers

In fairness, he had a really poor 1,St half and any criticism of that is legitimate. But I think overall, he is quite good.

True, but most of the comments haven't been about his first half performance; more the general idea that he's not good enough. I think he takes a few too many risks, but he's been very unlucky for me sometimes as a lot of the very clever passes he's picked out amongst that group have just been off slightly. I still remember a corker of a ball he played down the line against Burnley that gives me hope.

I think that a lot stems from the fact that for me he's still got a bit of that Klopp era Dortmund DNA in him that needs wringing out (attack with pace 1st, think later). You can really see that when he keeps looking for the super fast one touch give and go on the edge of the area but he needs to realise that he's not got Reus, Gotze and Lewandowski who were all trained to play that way alongside him.

He ought to take a leaf out of Silva's book and relax a bit. Many times I've seen Silva deliberately slow down an attack/counter attack because he knew it wasn't the right moment (Whereas you see with a Klopp side they go for it anyway).

He's also had a lot to overcome in the last 18 months, which can't be easy. But I strongly believe he'll show his value for us, and I believe his positioning and off the ball intelligence will springboard him to future success once he gets his mind back in the game fully. Plus I reckon he's the closest to Yaya in terms of being a midfield metronome, which isn't necessarily what we need but it still has its merits.

there is merit in what you say. I've noticed that he looks to make passes that don't really fit with what we are trying to do. He gets himself in some really good positions and sometimes our lads can't find him either. Not on the same wavelength. It's not unusual considering he hasn't played a huge amount with the lads. I'm sure given time, KDB and Silva will be finding him when he creates that space, and he'll be finding Leroy and Raz a lot more effectively.

One thing I love about having a player like Gundogan who arrives late in the box is it causes havoc for the defending team. Either a man has to go with him from midfield, which opens gaps. Or a defender has to step out if he isn't tracked, opening gaps. His intelligence should not be underrated in creating space for other players.

Gundo looks to be simply a goal scoring midfielder with - when on form - a good touch. When played this way I think he's an asset to our side currently - and I expect that his form will improve as he gains more playing time.

I feel that Gundogan will come good. The past injuries i think are playing a part. I dont think he is fully confident in making those 50-50 tackles and its understandable. Saying that I feel the more he plays the more comfortable he will be to make those tackles. I find in the champions league he has been a positive in the team 2 goals and 2 assists in those games so far is really good. His form in the league games will get better. Also with Fernandhino out him playing the sitting role in front of the back 4 could work his passing is on par with Fernandhinos and can do the job in that role if used there. For the life of me moving Delph back there I think would be a mistake as he has done so well at left back this season.

Been off blue moon for a bit and I've come back and everyone has lost their damn minds.

Quality player. Probably only 3-6 midfields in Europe he wouldn't get in.

It's incredible we've got quality like him Bernardo Jesus and Laporte on the bench.
There is always going to be a drop-off in quality when your starting duo is David Silva and Kevin de Bruyne. It's only natural.

That said, Ilkay does a fine job and contributes a lot of valuable goals and assists (Spurs at home, Burnley in the cup and Basel away.)

Some are being hyperbolic when stating "he isn't good enough." As a back-up to two of the best on the planet; we are very lucky.
