Dropping Bernardo to the bench and moving the best CM in the league, out to the RW was an incredible show of faith in Gundogan from Pep. Gundogan didnt come remotely close to repaying the manager. 1st half, everything looked so disjointed with him in the centre of the park and KDB wasnt able to influence the game at all. KDB moving into the middle and Gundogan dropping into a position where he didn't have to do anything, gave us far more control. Gundogan is a passenger, playing in a very good side. He will pop up with a few goals and grab the odd assist but when his competition is Silva and KDB, quite frankly there is no competition.
It's hard to disagree but I wonder if there is a more mental issue with Gundogan at the mkment. I'd imagine that suffering the injuries he's had would have quite a psychological effect on him.
He's not the type of player to fly into tackles but if he's not winning the ball back he has to be so much better when on the ball, he lost it about half a dozen times in the first 20 min, a better side would have punished us.Well, he probably won't risk the World Cup for a challenge, that mostly doesn't decide the match at all while the club is 1st in the league, dominating. Pep continues to start/play him so no going all in tacklings also could be an order by the team's doctor or even Pep himself.
Gundogan is always free to receive the ball, which means, he's more or less running away from the opponents when City attacks. That's why some of you think he's ghosting, in reality he delivers options for his team mates and sets up pre assists left and right. He's involved in most goals when he's playing.
No, he's not a Lampard and won't be one. He's a very European style player and gets not the love he deserves in this place. At least Pep knows what he has in Gundogan so I predict him to get his fare share of playing time in the future, even without going into every stupid tackling like a maniac.
