Ilkay Gundogan - 2018/19 performances

Imo, Fernandinho would be miles better than Gundogan, playing in his old position if required, with someone else playing behind him, as at Shakhtar.
Think he's too long out of that position and too long in the teeth for it now, plus it wouldn't be the best way to rest him would it. Also, Dinho will be closing on 35 by the time we bring anyone in.

I don't think he'd have to break sweat to match Gundogan's energy level tbh.

And having another genuine deep mid, would allow him plenty of rest anyhow

But if he's merely matching Gundogan and getting no rest then what's the point? It's seemingly another KDB level player people want.

Fern has to play at the moment because we don't have anyone. Pep is admitting it.

Against lesser teams, Fred or Jorginho would have taken his spot & in tougher games maybe even played in the same team. That would mean much less work over a season, for Fernandinho, even sometimes when playing.

As it turns out, neither would have been ideally what we want as they are neither great creatively nor defensively, just a bit 'meh' like Gundogan. But the idea was that either would be a solid, important player in that position, & take the weight off Fern, which is what we need imo.

Then imagine ditching Gundogan for a real top, exciting mid, with Foden also taking over from any who lack form or who are getting older, then replacing.

We would be incredible, as the workrate we had v Liverpool, could be the average.

It's primetime to sell him and let Foden take his minutes, while getting in a proper backup to Dinho.

He's not good enough in any position to be starting for us, yet I can bet he's on a starters wage.

The problem is that Fernandinho and Silva need replacing soon, we also need a new LB, and a CB when Vinny leaves.

It's ridiculous to get rid of Gundogan and give ourselves another headache in terms of profiling the right player for that position.

Foden is best as a deeper 2nd pivot with license to go forward. His skillset hasn't exactly matched up to our lineups.

Although Gundogan is very gifted - if we aren't going to play dual pivot - then we can definitely find better attacking midfielders and better pure defensive midfielders. As much as I like Gundogan - we might well be better off selling him if we're not going to play to his strength.

The thing is, whether you like the fella or not, we either need to extend him or sell him this summer. Otherwise we could lose him on a free in 2020.
