Ilkay Gundogan - 2018/19 performances

The problem with Gundogan in our squad is that he isn't good as the sole defensive midfielder - that's not his forte. Against Arsenal, he was played at his best position - as a deeper lying sort of DM sort of AM with someone else (Fernandinho) assigned the primary DM role.

When Arsenal had possesion Gundogan dropped into DM to allow Fernandinho to drop to centre back.

He's had as many good games on average in that role as elsewhere.

For example, away to Arsenal and Spurs last season, and Chelsea at home last season.

We need to stop trying to put him in a box, one of his greatest assets to us currently is the fact you can't put him in a specific box because of his versatility/adaptability. The ideal squad player.

True - but we had 3 at the back following turnover - essentially our main DM dropped further back to play CB.

Point being - Gundogan is great on offense playing deeper - and can contribute a bit on defense. Play him as our sole DM... and he's going to suffer against any side that gets the ball for extended periods.

Sneaky feeling you just have it in for him mate or your just trying to prove yourself right to much . @Rolee as it down to a tee here and your just talking macca.

It's you who needs the caffeine :-)

I love Gundo - hugely so.

Against Arsenal he's finally been played in position - and he was awesome.

It's telling that Pep loves him too - listen to any of Pep's comments about him.

TL/DR

Gundo is not a sole DM. He's a deep lying pivot who can contribute somewhat on defense.

Playing deep without primary defensive responsibility - he will fucking *kill* the opposition - this guy is World Class.

I thought he was really effective in that role on Sunday. Didn’t like the team when I saw it but it worked very well.

Hated the fact that Bernardo was at RW. He played pretty well there - and our midfield is jammed with talent - but Bernardo is best central.

In and out of the game a bit (as usual) but he must have played about 5 or 6 absolute quality passes going forwards. Plus the corner early on was a beaut.

Decent 1st half, absolutely invisible in the 2nd. He would be fine if a game lasted 20 mins.
