Ilkay Gundogan - 2018/19 performances

I thought it was one of his worst performances last night.

My seat was right behind the dugout and I'm pretty sure Pep was furious with him too.

Lets put it this way, he's miles ahead of the two midfield targets we missed out on in terms of performances and ability.

We might have dodged a bullet with those two but it doesnt mean the problem of us needing someone better than Gundogan, has gone away.

Agreed. Jorginho is struggling at Chelsea - yet - we don't have a true metronome in our side - a deep lying midfielder whose responsibility is to run the game and link play. I think we'd be even better with such a player in our side - if Jorginho becomes available, I'd like to see us sign him if Pep still has faith in him.

To be honest I don't think he can cope with the pace of the premier league, as soon as teams put pressure on him he goes missing. I imagine he would be great against teams who park the bus so he can just keep recycling the ball but against teams like Liverpool I don't think he would cope. I also think he's a defensive liability.

He was an integral part of one of the most iconic seasons in the history of the premier league and is trusted my arguably the greatest manager in world football. If he was as bad as some make out I'm guessing he wouldn't play as much as he does.

Pretty sure God aka Fernandinho is that player

Pity that his defensive ability can often take away from the fact that he is brilliant on the ball

I think "integral" is rewriting history. He was a squad player, who played his part, nothing more, nothing less.

Pep has a bit of a boner for him. His performance levels over the past couple of years have been 2 or 3 levels below those of his peers and yet he continues to get games. If Gundogan was judged by the same standards and criteria as say Sane, we would have waved goodbye to him 12 months ago.

In a European game where we win against all odds and when KDB and DS have relatively poor performances, still it goes on. He is probably the most adept player in the team at finding space and turning on receipt of the ball but you declare it a weakness in his game. I despair at times.
Not to mention, he doesn't like to criticize :)
