Ilkay Gundogan - 2018/19 performances

I disagree, he's a good squad player and we've already got enough players leaving in the next 2 year's with Aguero, Silva, Kompany.

I doubt he's on big wages, he's only 28, keep him around as a backup, we're not likely to get another international quality backup for less than £50m these days and it's money we just don't need to spend.

Also when Pep leaves we want to carry on what he's done and part of that is keeping his players around, as Barcelona lived off Busquets, Messi, Pique, Iniesta and Alves managing themselves for a good 5 years. I hope we keep as many of this squad as possible together for as long as possible.

So you think, we should offer him a new deal? Because letting his contract run down is surely not going to happen. He will be asking for an increase and will already be receiving offers as summer approaches.

Gundogan is not part of the core players that will stay here for years imo. That core is Ederson, Bernardo, Jesus, Stones, Laporte, Mendy, Walker, De Bruyne, Etc

I think it also depends on how well he plays this season but he has played a lot of games and I would need to see an Otamendi style improvement for me to want him to stay.

I maintain that another serious injury and he’s finished. He’s regained some confidence but that will always play on his mind. I would take £30m-£40m and either bring in Rabiot on a free for example or match what we get and bring in a top top midfielder.

The finish was fucking shite.

We don't usually praise people for such shit finishing, we usually say 'ffs' but when you are trying to bullshit a point pretty much anything goes & honesty goes out of the window.
I see you ignored the question. Again, I'll repeat... In comparison to others on the day, where did you put Aguero on your list of worst to best?

Its a simple question :)

Gundogan is no KDB , but he is definitely affecting games just needs to take his chances and contribute some goals now , probably not a starter if all the players are fit , but he proves the theory of needing a strong squad and would walk into a lot of top european teams

He’s regressed since he first came. Don’t know if it’s down to the injury he sustained but he’s really nowhere near as sharp. Frustratingly it’s his decision making and final pass which lets him down and that’s not something you’re necessarily put down to fitness.

I’d personal play the Silva’s in the centre and play Sterling and one of Sane/Mahrez on the wings against Newcastle.

Aguero was one of the only players above average.

It's an irrelevant question, in a thread about Gundogan, indeed a specific incident. His finish was crap & not something to add to a list of positives.

If you want to be more precise, when Aguero runs through on goal and backpases it to the keeper from a good scoring position, do I think he's 'done well' ? Do I fuck. I say 'ffs you should have scored' exactly as I did when Gundogan backpassed it to the Wolves keeper.

I don't tend to credit players for fucking up chances with weak shots. If he leathers it or heads it hard & it hits the keeper, fair enough.

You are the only person who would need that explaining.

But as you do: Free kick for goal= very good. Limp arsed attempt at scoring with loads of time to line it up= bad.

So Aguero did well. Ok. That's all I asked :)

I'm sorry @Dax777 but I just can't see why you're championing so hard for Gundogan. I know people get annoyed with the statistical shit I throw out but I always watch our matches multiple times. Ilkay adds nothing significant or game changing at all. He's the LB delph of free 8's. He doesn't take any risks at all offensively and rarely creates big chances. His defensive numbers are wank. I don't want to hear any bullshit about his positioning either because it doesn't correlate to anything tangible from a results standpoint defensively. He's not even good at retaining possession.

Possession Per 90 minutes.
Unsuccessful Touches / Disposed
Fern: 1 / 0.66 /
Dave: 1.2 / 1.1 /
KDB: 1.9 / 1.8 /
Gundo: 2 / 1.2

Believe it or not I actually have my opinions and then look up the numbers to see if they can tell me more to the story. I have no bias in this at all. He's just a bang average player. He's ok as a squad player but we're trying to build a squad where the 'squad' player is almost as good as the starters. I don't care if he stays until his contract runs out, leaves, or extends but I do know that his whole tactical assignment is to pass it as quick as he possibly can to somebody else and drop back. You shouldn't be having a 91-93% pass succession rate. That's wayyyy to passive. I mean I get it though. It's smart because he's the worst player out there and that's not his fault so you have to try to keep the ball out of his feet as much as possible.

Edit: Trying to devils advocate myself here and figure out something that I'm missing here to add big value to what he does and the only thing that I can come up with is that if you're executing your assignment effectively then you aren't making mistakes. If his job is to run around the entire match and make himself available for easy passes and then make easy ones himself without being intercepted then he's acing it.

I think the general criticism of Gundogan is that he doesn't do enough, which seems fair. Some games it feels like he does nothing but break down almost every counter-attack he's involved in. His attacking contribution isn't great but he's no defender either. When he's got Silva and De Bruyne ahead of him that's fine but he can't adequately fill in for either.
