Ilkay Gundogan - 2018/19 performances

I rewatched the Wolves can paying particular attention to Gundogan and I thought his pass selection was correct most of the time. I also thought his positioning was deliberate and sensible. I've said before that maybe he could take more risks but there's a place for a player who keeps things ticking over. I've no doubt that's why Pep brought him on when he did yesterday.
You have to watch more than once to see it.

It's hard to explain how well he did against Wolves to folks who don't go back and watch again.

He didn't say he was a mixture of Bell & Pirlo, with Gareth Barry, Platini & Roy Kean thrown in, he said: I thought his pass selection was correct most of the time. Some people, such as myself, can actually watch that the first time, see it perfectly, appreciate it & still think it's 'ok' but nothing special, without having to study it or agree with you.

If Pep wants a neat & tidy player, who tries to be sensible in his positioning (occasionally gets it wrong) doesn't create too much, but occasionally plays a killer pass, lacks a bit of pace & isn't great defensively, not great in the air, not great at finishing, but scores an occasional beauty, nicks a few balls, sometimes in good attacking positions, doesn't lose the ball too often but does lose it just the same as anyone else in our team (or Jorginho), is intelligent but not genius, then he has his ideal player.

He does indeed 'tick over' & position.

Provided he doesn't have a bad day when his positioning isn't great or his lack of mobility is an issue under pressing, when the centre midfield needs help in that respect, or he causes attacks to break down with slow or badly hit simple passses, of course.

Then, as he doesn't do anything else, he wouldn't be 'ideal' at all.

Probably a fair appraisal although i might have to watch him again, just to be sure ;-)

He's an average Premier League standard midfielder in my opinion. Can watch what he does 50x and he would still be so. Delph could do the same role, chances are Foden could do the same. Not particularly good at going forwards and not very good at going backwards, scared to make a challenge. Average.

For me it's horses for courses with Gundogan. In some games he doesn't seem to add much but against Newcastle I was glad he came on and felt he settled us down. A good player who gets to much stick in my opinion.

I disagree.

We haven't played to his strengths enough.

Gundogan can pick a pass when not under pressure and is good at ball retention under pressure. He's OK at defense. He's great on set pieces where we need someone to put the ball into a dangerous area. And he's got a very good ranged shot - he can charge forward and if not covered can deliver a dangerous shot on goal.

Gundogan is best playing deeper in mid - he can play holding mid if we're not going to be under pressure or if he has backup behind him - he's best at dual pivot.

For me, he's not average at all - but to shine he needs to play as a deep lying midfielder with time on the ball. He's no Pirlo though - not a metronome.

Gundogan has a skillset that when fully utilized is extremely effective - trouble is, our side often lines up such that his skills aren't best utilized. Moreover, our lineups even though not favoring Gundogan's skillset will often be best for our side. The case can be made that we infrequently line up to best employ Gundogan's skilset - and thus we may be better off trading him for a player who better suits the way we play.

He would start in pretty much every team except ours IMO.

He'd walk into Arsenal and anyone below. He's what United have needed for a while, we already know Klopp would play him because he did for 4 years & Chelsea wouldn't be loaning players like Kovacic if they owned someone like him.

Spurs maybe not, because they usually play with 2 destroyers and Eriksen.

He's so far above average Premier league standard midfielder, it's not even funny to pretend he is, it justs shows how distorted out fans' views have become after watching Silva, Silva, KDB and Fernandinho every week.

Or i've seen enough of him, here and at Dortmund to come to the conclusion he is average. There are better midfielders at every one of those clubs you have listed in my opinion but we are all entitled to an opinion mate :)
