Ilkay Gundogan

Have you watched any of our games this season? Genuine question.

Every single game.

Not that I need to justify myself.

If that post goes against your take then that it is absolutely fabulous.

We are entitled to one.

Strangely enough. I think Dihno switches to RB. But based on performance, KDB has been 3rd best so far. But he'd start banging in goals soon and all that will be elementary.

Positionally, @Proy is right Silky Ilkay is best at the position Silva currently plays, and he is a better all round CM than David probably is. But David is probably currently better than KKev at the slightly more advanced role.

But Kev brings an edge that no one else brings. I'm thinking Dihno moves to RB.

I'll be called out for it I know, one is already trying it.

It's absolutely clear to me that David is currently playing in the same position that we bought Gundogan for.

There are variations that could see Dave keep his place and somebody else misses out, but I'm struggling to see who.

Time will tell on this one. Let's come back in 6 months.

I'm hoping to see Fernandinho get a chance to play in one of the advanced midfield roles, think he'd be devastating as part of the attack.

I also think Gundogan would be better at doing the job that Fernandinho is currently doing simply because his vision and range of passing is superior to Fernandinho's.

It's fun trying to second guess Pep.

This was my initial. View very early in the summer, until Pep started confusing me with his unconventionaltialisms. Now I m pretty mushed. Now I just sit back and enjoy :)

But yes, Gundogan at the base, Silva pulling strings and Dihno playing the press general high up will be devastating.

Frankly, Ilkay at the base of a team with Delph, Dihno, Sterling and Logo as the 4 ahead of him might actually be our most devastating team for pressing the ball. I can see us crush a few good teams with that lineup. Imagine a City lineup without its 3 best players might turn out a masterclass.

This is going to be great.

I'd say Sterling, Nolito, Silva, Fernandinho and Kolorav have all had better starts to the season than Kev so far.
Yes I was speaking inbthe context of the central 3 midfielders and who likely gets moved for Ilkay. So 'kev being 3rd best' Simply meant he has been the weakest of the 3 so far.

I wasn't talking about the team as a whole.

I'm trying nothing. I'm telling you I don't think Silva will be making way anytime soon in the starting 11.

Fair do's.

Phew! :-)

You've been straight fella. You voice your opinion and tell it straight. Like I did. I respect you for that.

It's the fuckers who leave cryptic messages when they have a difference of opinion that annoys me.

This is a forum. We discuss and often disagree.

When you do (not referring to you), just fucking say what your thinking.

It pisses me right off.

I don't get why it's absolutely clear to you, when Gundogan was interviewed on signing for us he said that Pep told him he wanted him because he wanted a player like him. That to me would suggest he has or had Gundogan earmarked for the role Fernandinho is currently deployed in.

I think we can agree that IIkay is too good to not be a mainstay in the starting 11 and that gives us selection headaches, moreso with Silva's start to the season probably taking a few by surprise. I suppose you don't earn the big bucks and gain reputations by struggling to deal with selection issues. It'll just be nice to finally have a full, fit squad to choose from. Seems like forever since that was the case. All options available are of the quality required and for me that's the most important thing.

You can also factor in the number of games. If we go as far as we did in the CL and not throw the FA cup this time, there is plenty of opportunity for everyone to play.

I thought centrally we were a bit short in the middle, but with the system he's operating we are actually pretty stacked.

It will be an interesting season for certain

Oh ok, I might have mis-read your initial post then.

You've seen the games but you want Silva to be dropped? I can't really get my head around that one so I'm guessing I've misinterpreted what you said.

Also have you noticed that we're not playing with a number 10? The formation you suggested with two holding midfeilders and one number 10, you're aware we've not played that shape in any game this season, right?

Last thing I want is Silva dropped and at no point have I said that. My argument was an answer to a question that inferred it would be Kevin dropped not Silva.

As for a number 10, we must have watched a different game against West Ham because KDB was playing that role.

personally i cant see Guardiola changing 'dinho for Gundogan for this particular game, but he'll one of the first choice subs should we have a lead with 30 mins to go.

Again, honest answer, based on all of the games this season who do you think is performing better, Silva or De Bruyne?

So against West Ham you thoght David Silva was playing as a holding midfielder and KDB as a number 10? I'm not sure if you're serious or not?

Our midfield shape this season has been Fernandinho holding with Silva and KDB in front, playing as "free 8's" quoting Kevin himself. Similar shape to Barcelona, there is no number 10.

Atm Silva. Absolutely.

Dave wasn't a holding midfielder against West Ham. The full backs drop in and fernandinho almost becomes a centre back. At that point both Silva and KDB were supporting Aguero.

I guess it's down to your interpretation of what a number 10 is. For me Silva and De Bruyne are playing as number 8s this season, De Bruyne said so himself.

The old argument from last season of "one or the other"' from Silva or De Bruynd playing at number 10 is redundant for me this season. Firstly, because we're not playing with a number 10, and secondly because Guardiola had found a system that they can play in together perfectly well.

Silva has been the stand out performer for me so far, to drop him would be ludicrous. Pep said in his press conference that he sees KDB playing more as a winger than in the middle, so if Gundogan does take one of those number 8 positions, I'd expect DeBruyne to move wide as opposed to Silva get dropped.

I can actually see DeBruyne playing up front on Saturday, and he'd probably be very good there.

I could see nobody playing 'upfront'.

I suppose it depends on whether Pep thinks Kelechi's goalscoring potential is essential or not.

But if you look at their cbs, Blind, if he plays, would like to get on the ball, but the other guy wants to sit there marking someone, he's a defender, end of, & his man would likely be Kelechi. But if Kelechi isn't there, what does he do ? People coming from different angles running into areas instead of being there to mark. And has he ever played in that situation ?

Interesting conundrum.
