Injuries - 2023/24 | Ederson cleared to return to training (p 146)

Hopefully Haaland will be fine and bar KDB and Stones none of the injured make our first eleven.

Pep likes a small squad and every year we border on a crisis and manage to come through.
Two key differences. We have a smaller squad than ever and the second really crucial one is there's currently a significant portion of our small squad that pep simply doesn't trust.

Gomez and phillips aren't starting any meaningful game of football for us, they may aswell not exist, pep has completely failed to mention gomez's injury in multiple press conferences since he picked it up and the press havent enquired about it either which kind of shows how far away from being a useable player he is sadly. Nunes is miles off where pep needs him to be before he's trusted, that looks like a slow burn signing. kovacic is signicantly further on and hes the only one that will get there soon imo but since his first injury, is yet to be properly trusted. Bobb isn't there yet and even Rico isn't ready to be able to play 2/3 games a week yet if neccesary as he still adapts to the men's game.

Minus the keepers, that's leaving us with 14 outfield players by my count when all are fully fit that pep fully trusts. Thats a lot lower than previous seasons when we've had the likes of gundo and mahrez and laporte and zinchenko and dinho and jesus and sterling. These players that might not start every game or even many games but they're players pep had complete trust in and wouldnt hestitate to start them in a big game like the dippers at home. Our trusted squad is so small now that just a handful of injuries means the team picks itself automatically.

Can’t disagree with any of that really

The squad is only 1 off the maximum it's allowed to be, we may have 1 or 2 not trusted, but I reckon every fan of every club could name a few players in their 21 man squad they don't trust. As for injuries all clubs have injuries and we probably have less than most.

Not sure if its any smaller than last years squad but I can see your point.

Its the way Pep wants it. We could possibly have retained the likes of McAtee or Harwood Bellis instead of loaning them out but they would have got little game time if they had stayed.
Pep takes a chance with a small squad of top players, hoping that we have little injuries and suspensions.

The squad size is the same. We have 23 players (not counting Steffen).

Out - Palmer, Laporte, Mahrez, Gundogan, Perrone

In - Gvardiol, Nunes, Kovacic, Doku, Bobb

In terms of assessing the strengths of incomings and outgoings, Palmer and Perrone were last year's equivalents to Bobb and Nunes, ie not playing much. Nunes is still getting more time than Perrone. You can argue about whether or not Gvardiol is better than Laporte, etc, but it's pretty evident that the squad size is much of a muchness.
