Fergie era rags pretty much invented the concept of the convenient injury ahead of an international break. It got so bad it would be a shock if their players actually turned up for national team duty.

Isn't that why they changed the rules and said the physio for the home country had to see them and agree it was a genuine injury?

I may be wrong but I thought that only applies to competitive internationals and not to friendlies. That used to be the case but they may have changed the rules.
