Interesting Interview in the Mirror of all places

I'd be really interested to know what the answers and results were to the 'How should an elite team behave' quiz. One answer seemed to be get rid of Elano!

I really enjoy reading these type of interviews with Mark Hughes, he always come out of them with alot of credibility and they usually reflect what an intelligent bloke he is. Despite the grey hairs Hughes is deceptively young, he's only 45! In management terms that is nothing, and having already managed at International level with Wales and domestically at Blackburn before taking the City management position he has alot of experience for a young manager. Hughes is really growing into the role and must have done alot to convince Sheikh Mansour and the rest of the ADUG hierarchy that he is the right man for the job. Manchester City is now one of the most attractive propositions in World Football to players and managers alike and if Hughes wasn't rated he would have been sent on his way in the summer. However, Hughes was backed in the transfer market and in the boardroom and now City are reaping the benefits on the pitch.

We've only had one defeat so far this season and that was a dubious one. Hughes doesn't lose his cool or rant and rave embarrassingly the way certain managers do, one incident that best sums up Hughes' character and demeanor is when he was asked about Wiley and Ferguson joking on the touchline after the 'winner' in the derby. Hughes response ''I wasn't privy to that conversation, maybe it was a good joke'' This dry witted response was the perfect way to handle the situation, if Hughes had launched into an angry rant it wouldn't have changed anything and would probably have only served to inflame the sitaution more. Mark Hughes oozes class and slowly but surely he's changing the culture around the club, I hope he can be the man to deliver success because if he gets it right at his age, we could be looking at a manager who will be at the club for a very long time and that sort of continuity can only help our chances of success.

I have to say how proud I feel to have Mark Hughes as our manager. What a great interview. He always conducts himself with great dignity, much better than having a ranting imbecile as a manager, & I have to say I have noticed how smart & professional our squad are looking when going to away games. Keep up the good work Mark.

The more I find out about Mark Hughes, the more I admire and respect him.

I wasn't sure about Elano leaving, I thought it was the Manager's job to get the best from the player and make the team gel. But I guess I was wrong. Some players, however talented, need to go for the sake of the team ethos.

Mark Hughes is professional. The staff dress code should be smart and this reflects on a respect for the club they represent. The players should have no distractions when on duty (training or playing) and mobile phones should be off. Mark Hughes does not rant about this, he has a discussion with the players, then they agree he is right. (Sound familiar?)

Mark Hughes behaves like a gentleman; I still might not agree with every footballing decision, but that is the right of a fan and part of the enjoyment of the game. I can not think of a more dignified manager in the premiership and for that he deserves respect.

It is only early days and pressures will increase. I hope he continues to rise to these challenges and does not take the easy route of whinging and whining (unlike some other top club managers I could mention, who seem to think they have divine rights).

Continue like this and hopefully he will enjoy the success of our most dignified manager ever, Mr Joe Mercer.

You have my respect, Mr Hughes.

Hughes also dismissed criticisms by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger that the wealth of City’s Arab owners gives the club an unfair advantage.

“You could say it’s unfair that the top four have had £20m extra to anyone else by getting into the Champions League,” Hughes said. “We have an owner who wants to invest and invest in the right way.
So fucking there, Arsene.

I'm very impressed with the things he has said there. Setting a culture and only having people who fit that culture is how you get the best from a business. If you have one or two bitching about "management" and the rules it corrupts from within.

Which is exactly why people have to remember that it isn't like Football Manager on their PC. Elano may have had bags of ability but Hughes, his right hand men and the rest of the squad have to deal with him on a daily basis. If he, or any other player for that matter, isn't adhering to the rules everyone else is, they have to be dealt with. If the poor attitude persists, then they are out of the door.

Sven turned a blind eye for too long and the bad feeling in the camp grew to unmanageable levels (this isn't just a woman about Elano by the the way). It's only now Hughes is slowly getting a grip because of the mess he was left with.

Agreed 100%.

Remember reading Niall Quinn on his transfer to Arsenal saying at Arsenal you weren't even allowed on the training pitch with a whole in your sock but when you came to city nobody cared how you turned up on the training pitch.
Show how professional the club has become since those days.
good point, wasn't it Quinn who went to meet his new teammates on a pre-season tour, found them in the pub with Steve Lomas and Steve Macmahon toe to toeing it?
Hughes is top notch BTW, i love the way he treats the press and other managers
