Interesting photos in "The Big Book of City"

Just ordered it and Please Can I Have My Football Back? off Amazon. Looking forward to reading them!

An interesting read would be a book about the unsung City fans of yesteryear. The "ordinary" people that devoted their lives to City for decades.

It would be great to read about those people that most of us can have some empathy with. The trials and tribulations etc etc.

My Great Uncle loved City. He never married....I think because he was "married" to City. He went to nearly every home match for 60 years but was a quiet solitary man who rarely spoke to any other fans. When he was nearly 70 he went to the League Cup Final of 1976 and his shoes came off when he was lifted by the City fans when we scored the winner.

I like stories like that.

Mackenzie that is a great idea and something that should be done.............maybe Gary James could look into it when he has finished his other projects...........there are thousands of characters out there who have followed the blues, just a few i know -

- the fan who's wife divorced him and his devotion to city was inserted on the divorce papers

- the badge man, being going for years covered in badges, hat and retro city gear.....

- Jimmy Ho, arrived from China in 1969 and hardly missed a game since then...........

it would be a great book and a good idea

Pretty sure the picture you are on about is in Gary James Farewell to Maine Road mate if it's the one I'm thinking of? is it taken close to/or on the old windy corner?

I think the photo you refer to is on page 7 of the second edition of "Manchester The Greatest City" (ISBN 1-899538-22-4, published 2002). If my memory serves me right, we also used the image on the leaflet for the initial version of the book (1997) and that leaflet appeared in several programmes during the 1996-97 season.

I also used it on pages 2 & 3 and on the cover of the first version of "Manchester The Greatest City" (ISBN 1-899538-09-7, published 1997) but other images went over it on the cover so not everyone is clear on the photo (a shot of the cover appears on my current publisher's website - <a class="postlink" href="http://www.manchesterfootball.org/ebooks.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.manchesterfootball.org/ebooks.php</a> (very small though) and on <a class="postlink" href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/1899538097/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_0?ie=UTF8&index=0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/customer-med ... F8&index=0</a>

Pages 2 & 3 of the first Manchester The Greatest City is probably the best image of it.

I think the photo came from the photo agency empics and was one of a series I could choose from. This was the best image.

The photo was indeed taken at the Kippax Last Stand during the game (the left over nets holding balloons can still be seen dangling from the internal metalwork of the roof.

Hope that helps.

Thought I'd better post this. I've just been told that "The Big Book Of City" is down to the last 350 books at the distribution company that supplies Waterstones, Amazon and co. As the publishers are now unable to supply the bookshops direct as they haven't enough stock, this means that the book will sell out completely over the next few months.

I know a lot of people have bought the book and I have received lots of good comments, but if past experience is anything to go by, it's likely the book will be hard to find by Easter and Father's Day. I know the publishers will not be re-publishing, so if you've been thinking about getting it as a present for your dad (or anyone else), it'd be worth ordering from Amazon (at the cheapest prices I can find anywhere for it) or from Waterstones asap.

Thanks to all those who have ordered it and commented on it so far.

There are details on the book at the "James Ward Publishing" facebook page <a class="postlink" href="http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=149330&id=266700661882#!/pages/James-Ward-Publishing/266700661882" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=1 ... 6700661882</a>

Nothing like creating a sense of urgency Gary :)

1 ordered, so down to 349 now.

Great! The reason I've mentioned it is because most of my earlier books have gone out of print quickly and copies have only been available via ridiculous prices on amazon and elsewhere. It's currently happening with "Manchester A Football History" and it's happened with some of my other books. I hate to see people ripped off.

Hope you enjoy the book.
