Most Russian long range attacks come from cruise missiles which are more or less impossible to shoot down by a plane because they're fast and you'd have to know first that they're coming. You'd therefore have to patrol an area constantly and that requires massive resources.
There is also a geographic problem with Ukraine. UK aircraft cannot be based in Ukraine for obvious reasons and so they'd have to fly out of Poland. Poland is however 500 miles from Kyiv so it would take at least an hour to respond to any threat. By this point any missile would of hit Kyiv already.
Obviously we are not going to go anywhere near the Russian army who are based eastwards towards Crimea.

We dont know how many were hamas fighters but given they are not massive in number i doubt many were fighters .
