The supposed cassus Belli here betray's the likely intention.
The US is not going to be allowed to send ground forces over the Zagros mountains and they know it, so the next obviously best thing is to just bomb all the oil infrastructure which in the case of Iran is pretty much all in the South and in range of carrier air forces. So i expect a bombing campaign leaving Irani oil in tatters for a while. Not too long because the Chinese soon enough will want to repair it when possible. The US and Saudi Arabia produce a lot of oil no biggy for them if the price of oil rises, and besides Iran they are also doing a job on Venezuela which likely leaves China to question who the USA is trying to strangle economicly.

No chance, missile strikes maybe, but no chance of a ground war. Won't do much good in the battle against Islamic terrorism though. Will likely open up a whole new recruitment drive. Hope we stay clear but we probably won't.

Yeah imho while there is no reason for either Russia or China to intervene right away it's also in their significant strategic interrest to not allow the US a foothold across the Zagros mountains. I could forsee a vicious proxy conflict if the US would try that.

This 'country' has a smaller population than Sheffield but is the second-wealthiest in the world after Qatar and comes complete with a Talk Show host as PM. What the EU is all about - what's not to like?
