Watching Ireland now, they could do with Superman in their team. Hope he does not return to international football though as his form for City has been amazing since he stopped playing for them.

What do people think would he benefit from international games or would you prefer him to stay away?

Not fussed the decision is down to him, seems from reports he was subject to some ribbing over his hair which almost bordered on bullying and thats why he left, can't see him wanting to return, as I say matter for him.

If Ireland do make it to the World cup then I can really see Stephen being tempted to play.

I don't think he will though as it will be seen as though he only wants the glory of the World Cup and didn''t help them get there so why should he play.

Trap told him he wouldn't be able to do that without having played a part in getting there

Fair play to him for sticking to his guns, from the stories that went around he was treated shockingly and doesn't owe them anything. Saying that though it would be a shame if somebody of his talents wasn't at the world cup, he deserves a chance to shine.

Someone on here said it was a family thing, those sort of fall outs usually take a long time to resolve.
I think he should take part, just to show the world how good he is, but it's down to him.

trust me mate, if stevie made himself available he'd be there!

I think, after another good summer of training, Stevie will announce that he is ready to play for Ireland again. Watching them tonight they havent got a player to lace his boots yet they could very well qualify for the finals.

Lets hope he does go back because he should be playing at the highest level and making us proud!

end of the day match practice can only do him good, but if superman keeps churning out seasons like last one then im not bothered =)

400th post btw

I never got the fact that everyne thinks international football is a step up in level. Unless you are playing Brazil, Italy, Spain, England or Germany the level is surely lower than a top domestic league. I think the Premier League is much more difficult than internationals. Some of the international teams are pure shite!

Would Ireland be a great addition to the squad, yes without question.

But Ireland imo acted like a complete brat and shouldn't be allowed walk back into the squad just because he's changed his mind. He acted like a brat, for whatever reasons, you don't just walk away freely and not look back with no excuse, no apology, nothing. You don't act the way he did, and after an age, after he turned his back on his country, his teammates, and let them do all the hard work, he shouldn't be able to change his mind like that. If Ireland qualify for the world cup, (please God) there will be a few people who'll raise an eyebrow or so.

He's not your typical Irish player though, he doesn't have that attitude. Every player on the pitch tonight showed great character and heart and commitment, they faught hard and give it their all. Can I say that I know that Ireland will give 100% for the team..no.

Irish players, the majority of them, are sound, great characters. Ireland doesn't seem to fit into that type of people that they are. He's a different attitude, he's the flashy personalised cars, a limelight seeker, most Irish players aren't, all of them aren't.

One thing that was so rare about the Irish team is that all the players wanted to play for their country, which can't be said about a lot of modern day players who couldn't be bothered playing for their country, these players love playing for Ireland and see it as an honour, they give everything. Ireland just gives the impression that he thinks he's better then us, that it's almost an embarasment to play in the team. I mean last time I checked, we're not that bad. We don't go to World Cups (if we qualify) hoping to win them, or expecting to, we take it step by and step, and give it our all and ya, we're guilty of having that give it a lash attitude. But I mean Roy Keane was 10 times the player Ireland is, was United's captain, he didn't think he was better then this team. He got himself sent home trying to get improvements for this team at the WC, but he came back because it was an honour to play for the country.

If Ireland was to come back, would people be annoyed..maybe for a microsecond, because he's that good, but if he was going to come back, changed his mind and gave a half assed go on the pitch, then he shouldn't bother at all.

Once he gives 110% no one will care, but that's all we expect here, we're not deluded like the English..(no offense) we don't think that we'll win the WC or whatever, we take it game by game, wanting everyone to give 110% and if we go on, great, if we don't, there's nothing more we could really have asked for them. The last time Ireland were in any sort of campaign was the WC in 2002 and it was the highlight of a lot of these lads careers, how Ireland doesn't want to be a part of that is beyond me.
But everytime the RTE (Irish) panel talk about the WC and can Ireland qualify, it always comes down to someone saying that for the sake of Given, Dunne..etc, great players who haven't a lot of time left, should get another chance to show how good they are on the world stage and would hope and love if we do.

That and we had the best time there, mighty craic.

Ireland seems to have the attitude of a typical Premiership superstar.

Like here's an account from one of Given's brother,

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.castlebar.ie/board/0302/48526.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.castlebar.ie/board/0302/48526.htm</a>

5th paragraph down describes how most of the players and friends of the players and families and a bucket load of Irish fans, ended up in this Irish pub in Korea (because they are everywhere) after the Spanish game that knocked us out, and it tells basically of all the craic they had, and there's a line there where he said can you imagine the English players doing the same..Ireland fits into that group. He's more one of them, those superstar players, then one of the Irish lads.

Look do I want Ireland to come back, yes. More then anything, but we will not beg..well we might be desperate enough to do so, but in principle anyway, we wont beg.

Shay Given did an interview yesterday in the Irish Times.
There's a bit, I posted it below, where he talks about Ireland not playing for Ireland.

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/sport/2009/0606/1224248173161.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/spo ... 73161.html</a>

“I didn’t have a problem with Roy coming back. You want the strongest team to be picked for Ireland and whether it was Roy then or Stephen Ireland today, if he was to come back I wouldn’t have a problem. People shouldn’t get caught up in politics, who’s right, who’s wrong. Forget about the baggage and get on with it.”

Since he moved to City, has he spoken to Ireland about Ireland? “I haven’t really had a deep conversation, sat him down. I’ve kind of tried to keep it jovial. I spoke to (Richard) Dunney about it and he has spoken to him a few times. But at the minute it’s not right for him. There’s no defining reason for it.

“What I can say is that since I’ve been at Manchester City he’s been fantastic and it’d be brilliant if he was here with us. He is brilliant, the best player at the club. When he played for Ireland I didn’t think he was that good and he would probably admit that himself. But last summer he went off and worked with a fitness guy and he worked hard. He’s been our player of the season and you can see why, he’s a class act.

“When they do the Pro-zone stats on his running, distance covered, high-intensity runs, he’s probably one of the top three in the Premier League. He is phenomenal and he’s added goals this season. Even in the 90th minute he’s dashing into the box. He could add a lot to this team. Hopefully one day he’ll come back. When he does, people should welcome him. He’s a young man. The door should never be closed. But it’s got to come from him himself.”

He must play at the world cup if Ireland get through.

He would get absolutely slated by all forms of media (and therefore the fans) if he took no part in the qualifiers and then put his hand up for the world cup, no matter what the truth about his absence from the team may have been.

You have misjudged Ireland's character by a mile there mate. One of the most down to earth, friendly and hard working players in the premier league. If you ever get a chance to speak to Stevie, you'll see what a sound guy he is.

The reports of bullying by these "sound, great" teamates was sickening, and I would understand completely if Stevie never went back to play for Ireland with that group of players.

Nobody will ever know the real reason why Ireland doesn't want to play at the moment for Ireland. I have no problems with him not playing I would love him to come back and play again but if he doesn't feel up to it yet so be it.
I would have to disargee when he has played for Ireland he has been 1 of the standout players during those 6 caps he has scored 4 goals which were vital in Stan holding onto his job so he gave it his all. I dont think it is the players but you got the likes of Don Givens coming out and basically saying IF he was boss he would never get near the Irish shirt. I think Trap could be doing a little bit more talking to Ireland. There were rumours in yesterdays paper that Trap called Stevie to say well done on a great season now is this just media bullshit or did it happen only Stevie would know this.
I dont think he has anything to be ashamed of if and when deciedes to come back as they say let the football do the talking. I can see the fans getting on his back but he is good enough to win them over.
Look at the midfield we have its Andrews and Whelan they aren't up to international standard. In a ideal world with everybody to choose from these 2 would be lucky to make the bench. Stephen Reid and Stephen Ireland in a ideal world would be our central pairing and would ad a lot to the team. I hope he comes back as he could go down with the Irish legends and become the greatest ever player to come out of Ireland.
