Irish travellers rounded up in Manchester.

I met a nice traveller lad near where I live once. Very polite. Said he was a copper and needed to look in my pockets for some reason... Seemed helpful.

would you mind explaining this in more depth?
edit: the part about berbers i mean

It was probably an unfair specific reference and generalisation.

I can remember reading an article that used age demographics of a general population to make the point about younger populations were more predisposed to violence and berbers were one of the samples.

But probably gave it too much weight.

As long as they're up to date with HMRC, DVLA and the VAT on their ' one off special offer, life time guarantee, drive ways, who cares.

We have had many a run in with travellers on sites where we have been working over the years and I can say with 100% certainty none of those experiences were pleasant.

We've had stuff stolen, vandalised, vans broken into, had people shot at with an air gun, had staff racially abused and had staff threatened on several occasions. But I guess they are just misunderstood?

I saw this today but it must have happened yesterday I'm guessing. Although it's not a great look I believe the police have had problems with huge numbers of traveller teenagers swamping Manchester and the Arndale center in the past. I'm not sure if they had a dispersal order in place or where the train was heading back to, anybody know?

As a barman / sage I knew back in Spain once said when discussing Christiano Ronaldo: "He is like the gypsy...always crying!"

Yeah, but apart from that?

i'm glad to read your clarification..

we have to be careful what we write,
especially when a lot of other people are reading it
and potentially assuming it to be fact.

i live in north africa.

berber is considered a pejorative term,
almost like the n-word to some of them.
they are, in point of fact, called amazighs.
(berber is where the term barbarian derives from).

i count 7 of them as dear friends.
they range in age between 21 and 40.
in north africa the customs are different than the uk.
it is perfectly normal for someone my age, 60, to be good friends with younger people.
you can be 80 and your best friend be 18.
they have no concept of age-distinction,
in fact they find it odd,
because we can all share our experiences regardless of age.

anyroad.
being a nomad in north africa isn't as easy as it used to be.
the border between morocco and algeria is shut,
you can't even fly between the 2countries,
let alone travel by camel or 4x4,
so their wanderings are limited.

as for the claim that they behave less well is way off the mark.
i was recently invited to join them in the desert.
an extended weekend party a long way from anywhere,
probably 40 of them and a few invited westerners,
not bothering anyone.
on the tuesday morning every single scrap was cleared up.
they didn't need to do it but they did.
the only thing they took were images.
the only thing they left behind were footprints and tyremarks.

and the idea that they are violent is not my experience.
they are peace-loving and wish to be left alone to do their thing.

amazighs are considered the lowest of the low by the authorities.
they have virtually no rights at all.
they are punished for things others are not.
just like countless other original natives around the world they have suffered greatly and are still suffering.

think on before stating untruths, mr k.

Some? You're being generous there. I've seen the state of the vast majority of sites over here after they leave. . They resemble a bomb site. They plague local shops, bars etc. Trust me, the majority of "settled" people in Ireland do not like them. But if you criticise them, you're then disrespecting their "culture".

They hit the Canary islands every Christmas and New Year. I go to Tenerife and it's a nightmare. Two years ago it was so bad lots of bars decided to close until the 26/27th December and made their venues all ticket on New Year's eve. Last year many decided to do the same, close from 20-27th December. They are a major problem.

The best piece of ' new ' equipment, a large hammer drill was bought of a really nice Oirish gentleman. I felt sorry for him as he was on his to Holyhead to catch a ferry and had no money...£50 ( I think ), drill, case, drill bits, chisels, grease, a great piece of kit. Got it home, 110 volts with a 240 plug on it, I'd been done. Once I'd got a 110 transformer on it, it really was the best tool I'd bought, still got it after 25 years

Last year’s. GCSE results showed
white Gypsy or Roma pupils had the lowest average score (20.3), followed by traveller of Irish heritage pupils (26.8).

I was not, in any way whatsoever, surprised by this.

So, again, having an argument from a faulty premise.

Quelle surprise.

Travellers may misbehave, they may even be criminals. They don't tend to incite racial violence or believe they are members of a master race.

This is also their home country.

I don't think banning hooligans from coming to Europe is excessive.

Okay.

I'll ask one last time and make it easy for you...

Are you against police action of redirecting these people back on the train because of a "protected class" or are you condoning the action based on information on [past] behaviour of possible thievery as they were in a group?

It's simple. Pick one.
