Irish travellers rounded up in Manchester.

Travellers may misbehave, they may even be criminals. They don't tend to incite racial violence or believe they are members of a master race.

This is also their home country.

I don't think banning hooligans from coming to Europe is excessive.
May misbehave?? You clearly have not had many dealing with them.

I'll reserve judgement on what's considered 'acceptable'. However, in legal terms, Irish Travellers are defined as an ethnic group and, as such, receive protection against race discrimination, race being one of the nine protected characteristics in the UK under the Equality Act 2010 (excepting NI where the DDA 1995 still applies, albeit with some supplementary legislation). That same protection is not afforded to the 'working class' (whatever that means these days) given that class is not a protected characteristic under said legislation. To paraphrase, we might think the law is an ass but it's still the law.

Just a question as I know you've not phrased it as such (maybe @bert38 can answer), but when it comes to a 'protected class' which law supersedes which when it comes to racial discrimination and potential criminal and/ or antisocial behaviour?

It seems pretty obvious to me, but maybe the law makes this a very thin line to work with?

So a bunch of innocent children aren’t allowed to have a day out nowadays
I say ‘innocent’ because as far as I’m aware these children haven’t committed any crimes apart from the crime of being travellers (or suspected) ?
So it’s ok for the police to manhandle young girls and force them onto a train? Wow
The same people supporting this totalitarian behaviour will be the same people who won’t allow this post to stay around for long like my previous post
Very very sad day for human beings and freedom

Same group of kids who have been constantly congregating at the Arndale and robbing stores. Fuck them, should have happened after their first meet up.

Just to play 'Devil's Advocate', how do you know these are "innocent children"? If you watch the video posted on them being dispersed one even said they come every year.

So, if this is so, and there's been bad experiences reported, why wouldn't action be taken to avoid repeated issues? 'Innocent until proven guilty' is an idealism, but when it comes to repeated history it changes.

So my question above this is rooted in that scenario.

Fair enough if the Police have got evidence that these young girls and boys are responsible for previous crimes then I believe in upholding the law and the offenders responsible should be arrested and tried in a court of law, maybe manhandling young girls back onto a train was a tad over the top and the response on here also OTT

Good.

Maybe if they didn’t have a “culture” of trashing other people’s property, leaving shit everywhere, anti social behaviour and going on robbing sprees, the rest of society would be more tolerant of the “traveller” “community”.
This

Tickles me when a camp rocks up and you get the “let them live there lives” gang chirping up.
Same people go quiet when the travellers leave human shite, filthy rubbish, ripped off old ladies and carnage behind.

Well, I believe the police treated all of this group equally.

Kids don’t congregate and travel in large groups for no reason, even back in the old days, unless they’re up to something or on a school trip. Fuck me the naivety of some people. Maybe a group of ten or so travelling together is normal but kids are way more streetwise today than we were at their age. They all know about the huge shoplifting problem that city centre shops have and the tactics being used by large groups so really they should know not to travel in such large numbers. This is the usual goading of authorities to get a response. As for sympathy for 13 year olds, where do we draw the line for responsibility? If I was the parent I would be aghast at my child travelling with such a large group into a city centre. Legally the child is still a child, yes, but legally the parent is still responsible if you use that argument. But we all know there are under age kids involved in criminal activity for the very reason they are the age they are. Yet here we are, it’s the police, and probably the large majority of law abiding citizens who support these preventative actions, who are at fault.

@unsworthblue Last year and in years past the travelling community has descended into Manchester city centre and rampaged through shops, stealing from them and assaulting people. Reports say there were about 400 involved.
This action was to prevent the same happening again.
How would you suggest the police dealt with it ?
