Is ADHD made up?

Good one, Pige.

He is a very lucky boy to have such understanding parents, hope it continues to go well for all of you.
Nice one mate. Not ideal pumping medication in his little frame, but if it makes his and our lives easier then it has to be a plus. He's settled in school more as well. It's quite unbelievable actually how much he's changed.

With Pominoz on this one. Loving and understanding parents can be hard to find in the age of therapists and social workers (Not that some of them do outstanding work by the way). With you all the way Pidge.

Bit of an update. My son has been on a medication called Concerta XL for the last 3 weeks and the difference in his behaviour is startling. It's like that bridge that wasn't there before, the bridge which failed in him being unable to do things off the cuff has been built, and he now thinks about things rather than just doing. That, for us, means a completely different way of living based on the things he was doing. He has had a couple of side effects, weight loss being the most concerning, but we've changed his diet since last Friday to build him back up again so hopefully he will get a more permanent prescription as at the moment it's all monitored every 2 weeks. I was all against medication at the start, but we were at a cross roads which meant we had no choice because of the disgusting way we were being treated by him, and it's made a massive, huge difference to us all - him obviously benefiting the most.
Fingers crossed it continues.

I 've only just read through all of this thread and just seen your update. Having worked as a parenting worker and seen quite a few children with ADHD ( as well as behavioural problems) it's good to see that you have finally got the diagnosis and medication. From my experience weight loss is a common side effect for the kids due to the meds suppressing appetite. Another one can be disturbed sleep because of vivid dreams, again because of the meds. Depending in which area you live there are ADHD support groups available which some parents found good because they could share there concerns with others in the same boat!!
As for the comment by De Niro, would be interesting to know how he disciplines his kids!!! By the way ALL parents sometime in their life will experience some bad behaviour/defiance/problem with their kids. If they don't then they are lying!!!!
Well done for sticking with it, that's what good parents do. :)

Yes, yes it is. Made up theory by do-gooders for feral kids. There was nothing of the sort when i was younger, just naughty kids, but then again there were no fucking soft arse pc brigades about.

What the fuck is wrong with you lately?

I wonder if it is only diagnosed in countries that no longer have corporal punishment.

This thread is far too much of a busman's holiday for me.

But:

ADHD is a vague concept that covers a very general behaviour type

The diagnosis is purely clinical - there is no objective test for ADHD

The medication used is non specific, which reflects the diagnostic concept.
There is no reason why atomoxetine should be as effective as methylphenidate in the treatment of the same condition if it actually had a single related antecedent.

My opinion? Whatever it is, it's vastly over diagnosed.
