Once upon a time (50/60s) was the most affluent city in the UK. Had a larger output per head than London and new diversified businesses setting up all the time. Labour decided to make it impossible for new firms to setup there (and setup elsewhere in the country) which resulted in a collapse in the fortunes of Birmingham and them being renowned for making shit cars. It’s fortunes have changed a bit in recent years and it’s not as bad as it was, so no not a dump.

The Custard factory and Moseley are supposed to be worth a visit. People say Edgbaston is nice its quite tatty around the cricket ground, tower blocks, maisonettes although they are building some yuppie towers near there now. There is some pretty fantastic Victorian architecture in the city centre it has to be said. Hand on heart the City centre is no worse than Manchester which is devoid of grenery, mostly generic new architecture (not as bad as Leeds though) and is very claustrophobic.

Probably no more than Greater Manchester. I’ve been doing a journey on the tram recently starting from Eccles and ending up in Ashton. Away from the city centre, nice places in Greater Manchester are in short supply.

Don't think Birmingham has ever, culturally or sporting wise, been able to project itself as the supposed 2nd city in England ?
Manchester or Liverpool have both been able to achieve this.
Pluses about Brum though :-
- The inner-city canals are great to walk about and provide some peace & tranquility.
- Better Christmas markets.
- Some good suburbs e.g. Harborne, Bourneville.
- Like the under-stated humour, they don't all think they are world's funniest people.
