Is Gaël Clichy that good?

Made the most interceptions and clearances tonight.

Stupid on his part for the penalty incident but i thought he was solid for the most part.

I've criticised him on this thread recently, but I thought he was good tonight, apart from the daft foul.

When a left back is beaten on a regular basis on one-on-one challenges, what does it says ?
Torres and Dumbia aren't accidents, I can't recall the number of time he's been unable to keep up with wingers out-running him down his flanks, since the mid of last season.
When you think of it, beating your left/right back must remain an exceptional feat, while even Crouch could nutmeg Gael and get past him, me thinks....

Best left back we have, head and shoulders above AK. If we carry on towards global domination yes will be found out on a regular basis, but should always be on the team sheet for me.

Clichy and kolarov need to go. Nastasic isn't ready yet. I prefer lescott.

You prefer Lescott at left fullback?

Did he used to play left back at some point at Everton? Couldnt be worse than Clichy atm.

Why can a player never just be in poor form?
They always suddenly become shit whenever they get on a poor streak.
Kolarov was hated for almost all of last season, he was in poor form, he is now considered our best left back, because he is in good form. Now the same thing is happening to Clichy, just give him time and he'll be back to his best.

If we gave up on a every player who's every been in bad form then we'd be completely replacing our squad every season. We have a few players who aren't impressing at the moment, Hart, Clichy, Nasty (sometimes), Dzeko, Garcia.
All of them are great players (with the exception of Garcia) and they have all done great things for the club in the past. Don't be so quick to abandon them, especially Dzeko. If not for him we would never have finished 2nd last season.
Just be patient.

Agreed. with every player on top form clichy makes it in the team no doubt. but for now he isnt playing as well as his usual defensive standards, and was never as good attackingly as kolarov. I'm no manager but for the time being kolarov would be my first choice LB until clichy regains form.

Just watched a re run of the game...and yes he's out of form etc, but that does not excuse laziness.

After 10 mins he did an over lapping break, but just trotted back leaving Merlin in at last back and we got exposed.

Sorry, but he had ample time to get back into his position.....and didn't. Form comes and goes, but if he isn't working doubly hard then his form will never come back.

There is nothing wrong with nastasic either. Laughable anyone could be having a go at one of the finest defenders I have seen for such a young age. and one who is set to be one of the greatest defenders in the world in the next ten years.

Posts like these need to stop in my opinion. Im not saying there is anything wrong with him, but he also has a lot to learn. Jumping for headers and being a little weak in challenges at times are things to improve on for starters.

Yes you dont see many 19 year old centre halves but to say he will be one of the greatest defenders in the world can we just reign that back. As if he just turns out to be "good" that will be dissapointing. I hate these expectations we put on young players from a young age. Look at Johnson. Micah was also going to be "one of the finest defenders in the world" at a similar age to Nasty as well

I never said he was the best in the world, I said I have seen few as good and as composed as him at his age. There is so much shite written on this forum about players who are simply off form or having a bad few games. We have seen the class of players like Nasri,Clichy,nastasic, and aguero on a consistent and solid basis. We have seen the talent they possess but then we have seen them not at their best too. I've seen threads and comments pop up telling us how shit these players are, even aguero !!! It's absolutely scandalous. Don't tell me about Nastasic because I've watched him play, he will become great if allowed to flourish just as Vincent did ( who should now be sold according to one absolute gem I saw the other day) . He's a baby and we forget that at times, he will make mistakes but all the talent is there to see and I have seen few those attributes at the age he is at.
I'm not going to change my mind about him either. The only thing that will ruin his development are the fans

Lescott played at LB under Hughes for a good few games, and our defence was fucking shambolic. He looked so awkward and out of position, never again.

Apart from the penalty last night Clichy has played well in the last 2 games. He's nearly back already.

He's not sadly, even in a 7-0 he still managed to get megged and beaten really easily at one point and last night he was lazy getting back and too eager to fly around trying to make an impact instead of focusing on the basics, which oddly would explain why when he's not in great form he has mediocre crossing, positioning, decision making etc.
