Is it time to make the Carling Cup a battle of Britain?

This subject keeps cropping up.....
The romantics masturbate over ''Celtic / Rangers / Hibs / Hearts / Aberdeen / Dundee United v Arsenal / Liverpool / City / rags / Everton / Spurs''.

The reality is Cowdenbeath v Exeter, Forfar v Torquay and Stranraer v Gillingham in front of 237 fans and three dogs.....
I'm not too convinced the three dogs would be that interested

League cup should be completely dropped. Pointless competition that makes too busy schedule even worse.
Don't think Swansea or Birmingham City would agree.

I think the league cups brilliant, two legged semi finals, trip to wembley, its superb
Sound like the Johnston's Paint trophy

I've thought for years that the "League" Cup early rounds should be played pre season. This would mean Premier League clubs will play their better players so they can get up to speed for the league campaign instead of jollying off round the world
It would also be good if the competition could be completed before the start of the Champions League group stage (mid September)

There have been a few attempts in the past to have a British Cup competition but they died a death.

I think having a British Football League Cup is a good idea but I very much doubt it will ever happen.

A more radical idea might be to finally have a unified British team competing in the European Championships & FIFA World Cup (as we have done in the Olympics).

It might be the only way we can seriously compete with the European and South American footballing giants, especially with players like Gareth Bale available.

So because once every ten to 15 years 1 player from the other home nations is good enough to get in the England squad we should give up our individual identities?

The Home Nations individually hardly have a glittering record in international competitions, with just the one trophy to show for all those decades of participation.

And despite England being currently ranked by FIFA as the 4th best team in the world, we all know that the very best they can expect is perhaps a Semi-Final slot.

The United Kingdom having four different countries competing in international competitions is an historic abnormality - can you imagine the 50 different states of the USA all competing in the World Cup?

You appear to be mixing States up with Countries. 50 States make up the country of the USA, 4 Countries make up the United Kingdom.
And regardless of whether the home nations have had success or not it's still advocating giving up national identity for the sake of 1 player a decade to not come from England. And that would still hardly make us any better.

As for abnormality why? we have four separate governing bodies and 4 separate league structures. There is nothing abnormal whatsoever.

Your national team will never make any success at summer international tournaments with amount of games played during the season. It doesn't help Premier League clubs in Europe too.

Make it 25million to the winner see if its still pointless.

-- Wed Feb 27, 2013 1:28 pm --

Better still, call it the Etihad cup 50 mil to the winner,no second elevens then.

fuck the porridge gobblers. ;)

The League Cup final in 1976 was one of the best days of my life so far.

Obviously been bettered since but I still remember it fondly.

Bollox to Celtic and Rangers. If they want to be in our competitions then join our league, at the bottom.

But I do like the north/south idea. It would save clubs and fans a small fortune in fuel and save energy/CO2 to-boot. Get it sponsored by an energy company and away you go.
I'd also do away with replays for similar reasons... unless they already do this?

It might well be relatively unimportant for the bigger clubs but as has been said it does give those clubs the chance to play fringe players.

Well, do it then :)

It's pretty pointless in it's current state.
