By a country mile .
I always think of someone like Spanish Dave , who was a fantastic leader of an orchestra but to get the best out of him, other players had to be on his wavelength.
Messi could conduct the orchestra, play lead percussion, wind and strings . On a good day , he’d even play that triangle thing.

Pele or Messi is like apples and pears.
A previous poster pointed out Pelé basically played almost his entire career at Santos. He won three World Cups.
The game is now saturated with TV coverage compared to the 60s so Messi has been more widely seen and appreciated plus his phenomenal stats.
I really do think it’s an impossible choice so it’s a tie for me.

the problem with these debates is that people are too young to remember Pele. Messi is certainly the best player of this generation but better than Maradona and Pele, I don't know

I was listening to so many so called "pundits" over the last few days especially talking about "How Messi has to win the World Cup to be regarded as one of the best ever up their with Maradona ect"...I never heard so much shite in all my life!

So IF:
Argentina lost on penalties, Messi isn't up with the best.

Argentina win, He's up with the best.

So fucking pathetic.

No matter what happened in the game today he's going down as one of the greatest ever! How lucky have we been to witness this guy playing football the last 20 years! He's a fucking genius!

Totally agree

Heard it said from so many people aswell

What if he was born in Scotland or Ireland etc - he’d still have to win the WC to be the greatest ? Pathetic

Maradona played an incredible 343 games scoring 159 goals and providing another 82 with assists.

Messi has played 607 games 558 goals 231 assists including 73 goals and 29 assists in just 1 season.

Not a chance Maradona is ahead of Messi.

As for Pele, lol spent his entire career playing against school kids in Brazil.

That’s a bit daft tbh. As Brazilian footballers didn't cross the Atlantic at that stage and there were plenty of excellent defenders in that league, and he regularly got kicked to bits.

Think I’d probably still just have Maradona fractionally ahead but certainly wouldn’t get in to an argument about it.

I’d rename it the Greatest of the TV era though. None of us really have any idea quite how good anyone was before TV started covering football regularly.

Same here.

Shame Maradona f*ck his career up via the Mafia and drugs whilst playing for Napoli.

If you haven’t seen the Maradona documentary, watch it. It really is an eye opener.

Please spare a thought for Cristiano Ronaldo's feelings . . . . . .

OK that's done

Yes
Think the key thing for me in these debates is the longevity of Messi.

Maradona was done by the time he was 30.

Messi has been in and around the best player in the world for not that far off 2 decades.

It's what sets him apart in my opinion.

Surely the consistency counts for something?
