Is one more CB all we need to compete for a top 4 position?

30-35 million? Absolute madness. We would never pay that, not in a million years. That would be everton taking the piss. About half should do it, maybe a tad more but if not we should just look elsewhere.

Why not?

We currently have a better squad than Everton, Villa, and Spurs. We will challenge Arsenal for fourth without any doubt. We might end up short depending on if Arsenal is willing to spend before the window closes.

Well we may have the players, but it completely remains to be seen how the manager and his team will get them to play.

As I have stated many times before, personally I think Hughes is useless, and unfortunately I fear that means we will punch well below our weight. We *should* be in top 4 territory, but I fear we will not be. Even more unfortunately, I think we will do "OK" and therefore he will hang on to his job for even longer.

Of course I could be completely wrong about this (and I truly hope I am) Nothing would please me more that to see us do really well. Unlike last season, suddenly we could start playing with a clear plan, with an organized defence and with a consistent passion to win at all costs.

The thing that worries me though is that we could have done all of that last season with the players we had. It didn't need a load of new signings for us to start doing that. Jesus, even Fulham have that.

No matter what our team has been in the past or present at this time of year I always expect us to be able to win the premiership never mind top four, reality however usually kicks in after ten to 15 games and I usually have to adjust my expectations. I hope most other fans are the same irrespective of which club they support otherwise what is the point of the premiership. The club have said top six as far as judging sucess on the pitch is concerned and I am content with that, but until those 10 -15 games force me to change my mind I am hoping we can win the the league.

we need one more in midfield, that should give us the squad to at least has a bash.

Couldn't that be Johnno though?

I agree, if you read the official line then Elano was let go to allow for the development of Weiss and Johnson. A quality CB will see us make top 6 but I still think we are 1/2 yrs away from top 4

It is hard to say - I understand the expectations of some and that really is OK but do not get frustrated when it does not become a reality. Right now MH has the tools (players, senior management and owner support) and it now up to him to use them to the best of his ability - he knows what is at stake. My thoughts are that top 6 is where will finish but 4th is possible - September will be a key month in knowing where we are in development both Arsenal and the scums going 100% to try and put us in our place.

Wingers.

We only have one proper winger, Petrov, and he's a bit of an unknown quantity following his injury. Two or three more would keep me happy and allow our full-backs to save their energy for defending.

If our defence coaches could then sort out all the ball-watching and the enormous gaps in front of the defence which draw in opposition midfielders like flies, taking potshots at goal, we ought to be good for a top four place if our new players gel.

Onwards and upwards!

Cant see us catching Arsenal tbh they are far far ahead of us regarding team gelling and a winning mentality but hopefully we can close up on them this season and progress past them next season

Firstly I'd like to say hi. I'm a new member to this forum (I've been meaning to join for five seasons or so now) so please take it easy on me if I come across a bit controversial.

Firstly in regards to getting a new midfielder in the place of Elano, I can't see this happening just yet (especially with the like of Wesley Sneijder being mentioned). With the World Cup coming up a lot of players will be wanting guaranteed first-team action in order to get selected for their relevant countries. With the likes of Vladimir Weiss in the wings, I think we will be pretty solid in regards to attacking options (especially with Martin Petrov being back).

Secondly, I think our midfield in general is pretty much sorted. We've got: -
Barry, Ireland, Kompany, De Jong and Johnson in central midfield with Richards and Zabaleta as utility back-ups.

Thirdly, I think Lescott is largely over-rated and wouldn't want to pay over the odds for him (I think £15m is far too much as it is).
I would like to see Berde Hangeland (28 years old, 6ft 5") arrive for £12m and/or Michael Turner (25 years old, 6ft 4") arrive for about £8m.
That would give us tremendous depth in central defence.

Lastly, I agree with our left-back situation. I don't think Javier Garrido is good enough cover for Wayne Bridge; but I believe we've got a young 16 year old German left-back (Nils Zander) from Schalke who could be a good prospect.

Either way, another left-back would be my priority as well as Hangeland and/or Turner.
