Is Pep the greatest?

Does anyone think that the first 20 mins of Brighton with essentially a 4-4-2 might be the big switch next season. It would be classic Pep to come into English football and end up with a radical, attacking 4-4-2 system.

I remember a kind of 442 v someone, I presume that might have been where I saw it.

The goal Jesus scored yesterday was an old school cf & 2nd striker style combination.

That’s a good point. Creating something that can be passed on is a rare gift. In other walks of life, not just football.

If Pep does that we will be truly blessed. If he doesn’t, we’ll still have enjoyed the ride.

Nobody has jumped out at me so far, as a likely Pep successor, especially assuming that many of his backroom staff may go with him IF he goes straight to another club. The guy at Ajax has put a marker down but I'm not sure.

But if Pep is planning on actually trying to leave us with his legacy, & use someone who has learned from him, then the guy at Anderlecht could be a possibility.

Him and Cruyff, the next one on the list will be someone who can evolve Cruyff's total football one step further than Pep has.

I think the reason Pep is so good, is because he is so open to learning & is so good at putting into practice, what he learns.

So many comments on here still go back to the way Pep played at Barca, as if he is still trying to build Barca, here.

"Pep really wants 'x' kind of player in that position but has to put up with 'y' but he will sign 'x'. Then in the transfer market, he bids for 'x' 'y' 'z' & 'w' because he wants options.
"Ah but he really wants 'x' " some still, say, which imo belittles his managerial ability. He adapts

It took him one season, to realise that the Premier League is different. So he adapted his methods for Premier League personnel. He tries to get the balance between the physical size, pace, aerial ability & how many little wizards he can get away with picking. We mostly get away with it & if we stop getting away with it, he will adjust it.

Look at Mourinho's efforts at the swamp, by comparison. One trick pony & the trick didn't work. Fucked

Mourinho is one of the greatest managers of this era.

No comparison.

One of his strengths is the desire to learn and keep improving. He has certain principles in how the game should be played that are the foundation of what he does but he absolutely does adapt.

Shankley would have to be the best out of that bunch imo, because he created something which could be passed on. None of the others did that & I'm not sure Pep can be credited with doing that at Barca, as they have relied on Messi, to retain Pep's success imo. [/QUOTE]

He did do it at Barca, bit the person he set up to continue his success was Tito Villanova and he died 2 years later.

Barca under Tito were so close to Pep, theu were such close friends and so similar in approach it was like having a clone and I often wonder actually if Tito is the thing Pep has been missing in the CL these past 6 years.

It didn't really work at Brighton, but I think that will be what we look at more next season. That linking up between Jesus and Sterling might be a real feature, and might explain what Pep was explaining to Sterling afterwards. Also closing down even higher up the pitch so we are basically playing a 2-3-5, at least when playing against two banks of 5.

Haha. I had a premonition that our next manager would be from Anderlecht. Now it’s starting to fall into place.

Nope.

He will try different formations out depending on the circumstances but the primary framework is unlikely to change from 4-3-3 / 3-4-3.

I thought we would see more variety in formation from Pep. I forget the exact numbers but in his last season at Bayern there was a spell in the season where he used about 7 different formations in 10 games. However, so far, at City he has stayed very consistent in formation and I think that will continue; unless our opponents start to do something radically different.

I think so, when you consider that he's come to a foreign country and within 2 years our national team is copying his tactics. Tactics which many thought could never work in England. And obviously destroying pretty much every domestic record too while coaching great players into being exceptional ones. He is unique because no other manager has ever done that here and it's what elevates him above the rest

Most definitely! And if he was at the rags or dippers we’d never hear the end of how good he was but because he’s with us it’s swept under the rug by our gutter press and they won’t stop discrediting him and asking him questions like he’s the back hander one yesterday until they’ve hounded him out of this country

I think the gutter press could end up doing us a favour as pep is a stubborn fucker and will sign to really piss the dickheads off

City wanna sign pep for another 5years according to the Sun, if so that’s brilliant news especially after the vinny news.
