without doubt he is the best player we have! he;s the only player we have who if he was put in a world XI, nobody around the world would complain (only player esablished as quality world wide)

RIIIIIIIGHT, so popularity is the same as talent.

Sorry, I'll let Jeff Buckley know that he's a far worse musician than Britney Spears.

??

perhaps hes popular for being an established world class footballer?

He might not be soon .......

because NEW Robinho's about to hit town!

Tevez is, by far, the best football player we have. It's not about what you can do that makes you great, it's about what you can't do, and Tevez could play at CB and still put in a decent performance. Barry is next, then Ireland, SWP, Zab and Adebayor.

Tevez is twice the player of Messi or Ronaldo, who are essentially trick ponies and goal machines mixed in to one. Put Messi at CB and see how well he does. Or Ronaldo at LB.

The best football player in the world, in my eyes and using my system as quoted above, is Rooney. I'm not sure about ever, I'll have to think about it a bit. Mattheus will be up there.

im sorry pal but thats one of the most ridiculous points ive heard in my life! so because messi is only a forward and not a centre back (?) means he cant be the best in the world, thats not what hes there for!

It's one of the most ridiculous points in the world because you have completely misunderstood it.

The point, is that the best football player in the world, is not the person who can play well in a single role. The best football player in the world, is a person who could perform well in several different roles on the pitch. If you measure it your way, then you are valuing Robinho more than Given, because he has a deft touch and can score. Who do you think has more impact on the game?

What you are basically doing, taking it out of the realm of football for a sec, is saying that Nadal is the best tennis player ever because he has a good backhand, instead of Federer who has a weaker backhand but a better all round game.

I hope you get the point I'm trying to make here.

In terms of skill, he is our best player. There is no one else in the side who can stand still with the ball at his feet, and have the defender too scared to do anything because he knows he will be skinned if he moves!

I love watching him.

Our leading goalscorer, plenty of assists, and as you can probably guess, I think the guy is mustard.

ye i am understanding what youre getting at i think but i felt you were saying that messi wasnt the best player in the world because he cant play in goal even though he is the best player in the world (imo) in his position!

If you measure it your way, then you are valuing Robinho more than Given, because he has a deft touch and can score.

no im not, i think robbies the best player we have but i didnt say he is the player we are dependent on most! i think that keepers should not be involved in best player in the world arguments and should have a seperate award as it is impossible to compare outfield players with keepers! i do think robbies our best outfield player but we could probably deal with it if he got injured and was out for a few games and i believe we are more dependent on given but i dont involve keepers in talk of the best player we have!

Your pont might just make more sense if you exchange 'best' with 'Complete'. The most complete footballer for me was Charlton, internationally it was Cryuff. Whats slightly worrying about Rob is his willingness/eagerness to simply stop moving, early doors he was doing the step overs on the fly but for a long time he's attempting it from a stood still position...this is why he's not drifting past people and even if he does he stops again perhaps wrongly presuming that the person he just beat will not re-challenge him...that routine wont work in the premier. He's got strength back in his shot, which is a good sign his confidence is up, at a certain point last year he was devoid of power.

Yeah, I see what you are saying, but to me, best and complete mean the same.

As everybody alludes to, it is impossible to compare players across positions. How do people come to the decision that Messi is the best footballer? Is he better than Vidic or Casillas? Why?

I think the only objective way to judge players is by their completeness. If we are talking about the best wingers in the world, then fine, but this is why I underlined "best footballer" in the previous posts. Best all round, best at playing the game of footballer, that sort of thing.

Charlton is a very good shout for one of the world's best ever. See, this is a far more interesting discussion than the traditional "who has the biggest reputation?" which is what these conversations usually mean.
Certainly Mattheus and Platini have to be up there for me.

No dought in my mind what so ever that he is by far our most talented player,he can do things with a ball most players only dream about doin, dose he fight for the team?,no not alll the time but do u want him running up and down tracking back, and flying into tackles? cause i dont i want robbie to do what he is best at wowing us with all his skills and scoring about 20-25 goals which im certain he will do,with a bit more luck he could well have had 2 on sat if it werent for 1 good and 1 great save of robinson.

I really dont see why people moan about him what we have is 1 of the worlds best strikers, hes never gona be a bellamy or a dickov hes never gona give you that work ethic, but what he dose do is make you smile most weeks with the obvious love he has for the game and he always bigs us up in the press,i just think we are very, very lucky to have somone of his calibre at our club and long may he continue

i see the point your getting at. your talking about what the dutch used to aim for, called 'total-football'.
in my mind johan cruyff will be the best/most complete player ever.

oh, and martin petrov - cause he can play left back =P
