We had ours last Friday and I went just because I've only just started a new job and had to show my face. When I saw the list of who was going, I didn't want to go as I knew it would be dire as loads going have no banter...and it was a looong night. I've never been as sober on a Christmas do and there was absolutely zero chance of any gossip or scandal. A boring night. I ended up sat between someone who didn't want to be there and someone who blasted 2 bottles of red in 2 hours. I didn't really know either and our team was spread out across the room so we didn't have any bonding session/late night sesh either.
I'll be honest, Covid wasn't really on my mind until I got to the hotel it was on at. The place was absolutely heaving - a hundred in one room, a hundred in another and us lot were in a small room with no ventilation. Given there was loads of people from essential departments there, it could easily have ended up a full on Covid hotspot. Obviously, I've been double jabbed but still I can understand why some people did not want to go on medical grounds.
In our other office, their party is this Friday and there's loads not going as they don't want to risk their Christmas. I completely understand that, and some who were at our party on Friday will be going to the other one too.
I'm not a fan of "forced fun". I'd rather just go out with like minded people at work who I have a good laugh with.
I can understand anyone who doesn't fancy it and I suspect that if we have to work at home now, parties will have to be cancelled anyway. I feel incredibly sorry for all those who rely on the income from parties at this time of year, they've just had the rug pulled from under their feet.
