It's not English players, it's homegrown - meaning Clichy and Guidetti qualify.
You also don't HAVE to name 8 HG players, you just can't name a full squad list if you name them. ie. we have 7 HG players = we name a 24-man squad list but it doesn't matter because Nastasic is under-21 and doesn't have to go on the 25-man squad list.
Even if Lescott, Barry and Sinclair all left we could name 7 HG players/24-man squad.
Nastasic is not U21 so far as Europe goes (different criteria) & 4 of the 8 hg players in the champs league squad have to be produced by the club, so only Richards qualifies, therefore we can only name 4 plus Richrds in that list, leaving 3 empty spaces we can't fill with any of the senior squad.
Lopez, Rekik and Suarez then possibly? Thrown at the deepend.

We can get a squad of 24 for CL if we use 3rd keeper Johanssen classes as homegrown from academy. Guidetti is over 21 not sure when the dates of birth count but if he is classed as over 21 he would fill another spot. If he doesn't we can get to 23 man squad same as last year. Biggest problem with the two sets of rules is if you are signing big named players they will expect to be in both so the thing I look at is try to work out who will be in CL squad then you have an idea of how many more signings we can make before we need to get rid. IMO with the two signings we have made so far we are maxed out as far as CL squad goes unless we sell, so Tevez Dzeko going to bring in Cavani and Isco are logical.

Theres about a 1000 pages on these forums between these three issues, everyone wants to know info.
Deals can be 99% done and fall through, no one 100% accuracy on transfer dealings.
Replying to the 300 requests for PM's you'll have is the same as a mini-forum.
