Isco

We don't know the ins and outs of the deal, maybe the sticking point was his dad's demands, maybe it wasn't. It's equally as likely that the allure of playing for Real Madrid swung the deal at the last minute, and if so there's nothing we can do about that.

Isco looks like the real deal, but should we be a club that is willing to be dictated to be greedy agents, even in situations when the player is of top quality? Personally I think at this stage of City's development we need to be financially prudent, as well as reputationally aware, we need to watch the bottom line and we need to get the impression out there that we won't be paying whatever people ask just because we can afford to.

Yep and the collapse of the Hazard and Isco deals have sent that message loud and clear.

We were interested from the day Pellegrini was on board but the lad wanted time to consider his future after the Euro U21 tournament. He excelled and Real became interested, the prospect of staying in Spain, playing for Madrid and making a fortune was too good to turn down. We were hoping the Pellegrini factor would win the player and not willing to meet the ridiculous fees required. We did the right thing with both Isco and Cavani, otherwise we would be looking at paying huge fees for all of our players and now it is widely known that we will only pay what we think the player is worth. We have balanced the books and with decent champions league performances we will attract players based on the quality of our side not with money. It was a transition that the club wished to undergo. A shame that we lost out on such an amazing prospect but I am looking forward to Jovetic gaining full fitness and turning a few heads with his displays. Negredo and Jovetic instead of Cavani and Isco. I think we have done really well.

And at what cost? Two of our rivals now have players who would have improved us. Say the next Hazard comes along next summer, the rags are willing to pay his agent fee's and we aren't.. Then the next summer another, and Bayern pay it but we don't, etc. All our rivals strengthening with world class players because we're standing firm over agent fees. If we end up in a position where Madrid are paying it, Chelsea are paying it, Bayern, rags, etc.. They're not inflated agents fee's, they ARE the fee's. That will just become the cost of doing business.

I don't buy this Hazard wanted Chelsea Isco wanted Madrid bollocks one bit. If we'd gone in hard and paid what it took with both we'd have both, or we'd at least have one and wouldn't have gone after the other. There are plenty of players you can drive hard bargains over, and as we grow there will be plenty of players who will force their clubs and agents to broker good deals to come to us. When it comes to potential world class talent like Hazard and Isco you just get it done.

What I would say with Isco, at least for the time being, plenty of players start off brightly at new clubs and fade as the season draws on. His investment will likely pay dividends in a few seasons, but maybe we can just buy him then when the next new toy comes along for Perez ;)

His dad being paid more money decided his choice of which club he should join.
Should we have paid his dad more money to make Isco come and do his job? no. Glad he didn't come if he's letting his daddy do his bidding

I'm with this. We've had enough of these people in the past. If they want to line pockets unreasonably then I say they can do one.

Bottom line Isco wouldn't turn down Madrid

It has to be this

Playing for the biggest club side in the world in your home country with a much larger chance of becoming established in the National team

And that is the nub of the issue.
As a club we are focusing hugely on Europe - however, all of our main European rivals are landing these players so they must be paying the agents
fees and associated costs? But we choose to play 'hardball' whilst they are all snapped up. Morally it makes us feel nice and warm inside but from a footballing perspective we fall behind.
