It’s Quiet 20 - What is the Wirtz that could happen?

He’d be a much better false 9 with a better midfield behind him. Foden won the league playing largely as a false 9 and there’s no sign of him doing too well in the role at the minute

Even back then he never really stood out in that position. He was definitely weaker there than in the middle or on either side - which is totally normal of course. Sometimes I think he pays the price for being so versatile.

I think Delap would start alongside Haaland in a lot of games. Very different players.

Definitely couldn’t see that. You’d need to play almost a classic 2 strikers set up which barely any team plays these days.

The only time Haaland and Alvarez even played together under Pep, for the most part, was when the latter played more of an attacking midfield role, which didn’t really suit him.

If we signed some attacking full backs I could see us using it in the same way Pep did with Jesus and Aguero with a back 3/5. But yeah I struggle to see him doing it as a typical 4-4-2.

Just as an example:

Delap - Haaland

Foden

Savinho - Rodri - Nico - Cambiaso

Gvardiol - Dias - Khusanov

Imagining Savinho play that role made me feel ill.

That kind of set up isn’t happening in a million years. It will continue to be a central striker with 2 wide players and a core midfield 3.

Obvs, if we’re playing a team like Southampton’s level at home or something Pep might just be like “fuck it, these are shit, I’ll just play both today!”.

He has done it before, formations like that end up reverting to a back 4 out of position with City anyway. It's just who is holding the width on each side in possession.

Not sure the line ups of this season are going to be a base line for things going forward tbh…

Haaland and Delap would also never be a thing apart from super rare occasions as stated.

Has he told you that?

No but his brother and agent who has sorted his contract renewal out until 2030 says he absolutely loves it in Milan and wants to stay for a long time? Obviously things can change at any point and maybe we do indeed ask about him but i would imagine the price tag wouldnt be something we would do if it was 80m euros plus.

Already not possible due to the fact that he got his first child last year. He was there for like 40M. I don’t know why he wasn’t an option beforehand. Seems too late.

probably going off this interview.

“I see myself in Milan until I’m in my 30s. It’s one of the most beautiful clubs in the world, and it’s an honour to play there. Wearing Cruyff’s No. 14 shirt is special, and I am happy to be in Milan.”

"I'm not leaving. I'm staying at the football club and I can't wait for the start of the season and captaining this great football club."

- Fabian Delph - July 2015

I suppose it depends on profiles.

If we really want more of an 8/10 hybrid ala Gundogan, somebody who in defense sits next to the 6, but with the ball pushes next to our 10 (to make the 325), this requires a defender to come into the midfield to do, but Reijnders is then great to get (although the extension makes it iffy of a target).

Reijnders has no defensive ability though, I rarely see him get stuck in and challenge for duels (like Gundogan I suppose).

If we want our 8 to stay back more with the 6, and instead we overload with a fullback or other players, which is how we mostly have done this season, then we need a more defensive 8 (I think this is Nico's position next to Rodri), then somebody like Camara is better.

At least the names being mentioned are all top class? I imagine Viana wants to hit it out of the park for his first window
