It’s likely to be painful in the sense of breaking up a group of players that have been together for a number of years, which might be done either ruthlessly this summer or prolonged over two summers.
The rebuild itself is not going to be easy, as it will depend on assimilating a number of new players, many of whom might be significantly younger, reinvigorating a number of existing players, and striking upon a system that can get the best out of their collective talents. Guardiola is also going to have to work with a slightly larger squad of younger players, something he’s not had to do recently, and find a way of keeping more of them in form.
I’m looking forward to it but appreciate the challenge. I’ve said elsewhere that it might be 27-28 before we’re genuinely contending on both domestic and European fronts.
