But if we had the option to buy Baines or Shaw i would prefer Shaw. lets say they are both £25 Million then at least with Shaw we would have him over 15 years.

Of course, that's a no brainer but in reality the contract and fee would show the difference, would you say Shaw is three times better than Coentrao as you could probably pick him up for £8 million and he's only 26 and experienced?

is that an informed link to Coentrao?

Nope, just an example

A lot of sense in that post

The lad has only had "one", i'll repeat "one" England cap and a sum of £30 million has been thrown in the mix, if i was in the Dragons Den i'd be saying "i'm out", If you want English i'd rather save me money and go for Baines, as you say, the finished article.

But if we had the option to buy Baines or Shaw i would prefer Shaw. lets say they are both £25 Million then at least with Shaw we would have him over 15 years.

The problem is that in an individual case, that makes sense, but do that same calculation 11 times and suddenly you've got a squad with no home grown players. And unless the academy can provide, you end up in a cycle of buying decent but never world class English players for £10-15m to fill up the quota, and selling them a few years later for £3m when they don't get used. It's much easier if you can have a home grown player that's actually good enough to start regularly. Although obviously having a production line of players that are at least good enough for backup would be the ideal, and the aim of the current board. I'm just not sure how well we can replicate the Barcelona system, when they're operating in the Spanish system where you can guarantee that most 14 year olds have been trained by qualified coaches, and we're operating in isolation in an English system that's still miles behind. I'm not sure how much a handful of academies can do, when the whole system is broken.

I thought I would be able to relax and enjoy close season after the excitement of the league but I was wrong. Bored. Any ITKs got something to share. :-(

I honestly don't think we need a lot, I can't see us having the same injury issues as last year, could be wrong though, it wouldn't be the first time:)

These are our foreign players on the books as of today. I am excluding Nasty because he qualifies under B list.
1) Pants
2) Zab
3) Komps
4) Demichelis
5) Kolorov
6) Garcia
7) Yaya
8) Fernandhino
9) Nasri
10) Silva
11) Navas
12) Dzeko
13) Aguero
14) Jovetic
15) Negredo

So to comply with 13 foreigners two existing players are either dropped or sold. For instance Pants could be replaced with academy keeper and use Wright who is English as 2nd choice. That would take us to 14. Out of the others Garci IMO would be the weak link so he could make way meaning we have 13 players. But if we were to sign three more foreigners as proposed who else would stand down? Which makes me think we aint going to be signing three players but less than that especially if they are foreign.

Ashley Cole would free up a foreigner position, Kolorov would still be used in the EPL

I think, having been through these restrictions, that there is nothing to stop us staggering payments for new players and thus not breaching terms.......

As you state, we will also see outgoings, which could bulk up the pot..... Personally, I think we'll have 75/80m to throw at a squad which is now unified in it's narrative....... I know dan is close to the shaw info but things, as stated, have been accelerated, it may not be him but he's 1 of maybe 3 we could and should be going for now!!!

Were Begiristain and Soriano at Barcelona and the equivalent player to Luke Shaw appeared on the scene, i've little doubt that they would have sounded him out and done a deal. It strikes me as a bit odd that they're going to let United sign Shaw totally unhindered.

I've already said it a few times but it really needs to become part of our DNA to sign any and all English players who appear who are good enough to play in our first team. Even if that means bouncing out a foreign player. I know it sounds harsh but in the long term UEFA's CL regulations are heading to a place where more and more emphasis is placed on homegrown talent anyway, and someone like Shaw who potentially covers a position for a decade, is worth every penny no matter how harsh on Kola or Clichy.

I'm so sure we're fucking up if we don't go for Shaw (and Barkley when he moves) that for me it'll show rank incompetence from Txiki.

Disagree with your take on UEFA for two reasons:

UEFA recently tried to up the quota and the ECA jumped all over it and said no.

The ruling is just a way of getting around a foreign quota. The EC know this and have said that the number of home grown players has to be proportional to the perceived problem it is trying to solve. The whole thing will be reviewed again next year.

The other thing is that it's still probably contrary to European Law as it is indirect discrimination and most lawyers in this area think a challenge would see it thrown out. Teams would have to volunteer to have quotas and the ECA is expressly against it.

Hopefully in time we will produce our own without the need to vastly overpay for the likes of Luke Shaw.

I do like the lad at Derby though!

I would love to see Alexis Sanchez far away from that shitty club, and playing for City.
19 league goals for a winger, not bad IMO.

A very good player but we have plenty of attacking options and with Uefa's restrictions this would not be the most wise move.
